Alan Wake

Recommended Posts

Alan Wake is a psychological action thriller from Remedy, the legendary and renowned developers of highly successful action titles. Gamers assume the role of Alan Wake, a best-selling suspense author who escapes to a small town to recover from the mysterious disappearance of his fiancée.

Set in the deceptively idyllic town of Bright Falls, Washington, Alan Wake immerses players in an intense and expansive cinematic world that enables players to roam freely in hyper-realistic, dynamic and interactive environments. Alan Wake is mission-based with a deeply engaging and suspenseful story line unveiling new twists and profound character revelations at every turn. Players will unravel the riveting plot through multilayered character interactions, unique problem-solving and intense combat against terrifying enemies. In this nightmarish world, Alan Wake must use a variety of weapons to survive, including his most powerful ally against the creatures of darkness light itself.

[hide=Plot]Alan Wake, a bestselling writer, hasn't managed to write anything in over two years. Now his wife, Alice, brings him to the idyllic small town of Bright Falls to recover his creative flow. But when she vanishes without a trace, Wake finds himself trapped in a nightmare. Word by word, his latest work, a thriller he can't even remember writing, is coming true before his eyes. He somehow knows its his story without any memory of writing it.[/hide]

[hide=Gameplay]The story will play out in an episodic format, with a television show-style presentation. Remedy has confirmed that Alan Wake is only the first season of a bigger story, opening the door for future sequels.[7]

Light plays a significant role in gameplay and strategy. The enemies, called dark forces in-game, are sensitive to light, encouraging the player to take advantage of environment light sources and placing significant emphasis on the flashlight as a primary weapon. Players also have the ability to set traps which illuminate when triggered, either damaging or temporarily immobilizing an enemy.

Remedy also promised a free-roam, sandbox-style city, similar to those seen in the Grand Theft Auto series. Due to a mistranslation from the magazine Pelaaja, it was thought that Remedy had removed the free-roam however, Thomas Puha, Creative Director for Pelaaja, announced that there was a mistake in the translation and that the open-world side of Alan Wake would still be included. Puha said, "There is still an open world, but due to the story the action is more directed to tell the story better as youd expect from Remedy."[/hide]

[hide=Development]Alan Wake was announced at E3 2005. Microsoft partnered up with Remedy to release the game for Xbox 360 and as a Direct X 10-only title for yet to be released Windows Vista.

A cinematic trailer for the game was shown on October 15, 2008, just before the Max Payne film premiere.

On June 1, 2009, at Microsoft's E3 press conference, Sam Lake presented a new Alan Wake trailer and gameplay movie.

By-mid 2009, plans for a Windows version were put on hold. Remedy stated that they wanted to focus on the Xbox 360 version, though they were not permanently shelving the Windows version. They announced that all plans for a future Windows version lay now in the hands of the publisher, Microsoft.[/hide]

Looks like a pretty interesting game to me, a little different to your average games too. I'll probably end up preordering this but i'll wait to see a few more videos and possibly a demo too.

That would make for an interesting game. Would be like playing a movie. No serious, the trailer looks like a movie.

EDIT: When it goes slow-mo, it looks like VATS from Fallout 3.
