In the market for a desktop PC wireless card

Featured Replies

So when I built my new computer in a class earlier this year, the wireless card they supplied was a Netgear WG311v3. I didn't have any problems with it in our old house, but we've temporarily moved out while some construction is being done. Therefore, the wireless router got moved from 2 feet away from the computer to 20 feet, and I ended up with an extremely spotty connection. I looked at some reviews on Newegg, and found that others had the same issue. So, I'm not gonna put up with a wire running through the house and therefore will be getting a new card. I'm new to the whole idea of wireless cards (and Windows machines, I'm a Mac person) so I'm looking for your help here.

Preferably something less than $50 USD, wireless-G will do fine, and I don't need more than 54Mbps. Please provide a couple options if you can, as I'll be looking locally for the card as shipping isn't cheap. Doesn't matter to much though, any suggestions are very helpful.

Thanks!

EDIT: while I'm at it, I'm also looking for a free program that allows me to make disk images. Every time I run my flight sim (4+ hours per day) the disk is in the drive, spinning. If I can make a disk image, I won't have to bother with having the disk in.

I don't know about the wireless card, but I think you might just be too far, depending on the number of walls you have between the router and your computer.

And for the second part, are you on Mac or Windows, you weren't really clear as to what you're on.

Losing connection at 20 feet is definitely the sign of a bad router or wireless card, whatever the number of walls.

I know the card is the issue, my other computer will pick up the signal at much farther distances.

I'm on Windows.

I'll look, although I'm interested in the result as well. I'm not confident in myself on this account, and need one for my comp.

Oh, do you want USB or PCI?

PCI is what I have, though I guess I wouldn't mind USB.

Yes I know about Newegg thanks, was wondering if you had any specific suggestions though.

I'd get PCI because you don't have to worry about it randomly unplugging and they are more stable.
