Have you got a firewall activated? Maybe you have a router that can act as one?

If so, I would advise shutting it down temporarily and seeing if that helps (remember to restart it when you've done!). If you can't shut down a router, unplug the computer from the router and plug it in directly.

If your laptop is wireless, try getting a cable and plugging it in directly for it a bit.

Are you sure you have the latest Java Environment 5 Update 5 installed? If you haven't unistall all the other Java programs you have and download the latest Java from http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_xpi.jsp

Does Java work at all on the Laptop?

Verify that it is installed: http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

Double check your Java settings and permissions, as well as your IE settings.

Check your Firewall and AV settings to make sure Java isn't being blocked.

If none of the above work get a Linux LiveCD, I use Kanotix and Opera to play on my Dell.
