Graphics Card For Current Gaming?

Recommended Posts

My comp's pretty up to date because I have to keep it up to date for working with - 4gb Ram installed (3gb running,) AMD Athlon Dual Core 6400+, M-Audio 2496 Soundcard, 500w PSU.

Currenty have a 512mb ATI Radeon x1550, which isn't enough to run most games. I'm looking to spend around about 80 quid tops, preferably from Ebuyer or Overclockers. I basically want something that can run CoD4, Dragon Age, Oblivion and Fallout, etc to a decent standard - above minimum graphics. I'm running a single 19" LCD.

Any suggestions? I've been recommended a card from the Nvidia 9800 bunch but getting a second opinion, naturally. :)

Had a look at this...

ATI 4850 - 90£: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/164593

Much better than the (8800) 9800gt.

Assuming you have pci-e.

But before you order... Give us the specs of your psu. Just because it says 500w doesn't mean it delivers that amount. Brand+model name would be great.

Aint got a sodding clue, got it from PC World. I'm running at about 300w anyway so have plenty of extra room.

Yup, I got PCI-E, only one slot but that's what my current graphics card is using.

Look around for the receipt or open up the case and check what it says on your psu. I can't guarantee anything if i don't know what your psu is.

Lol, differs 3 quid and the performance difference is really big. Even if you don't like ATI (for whatever reason), choosing the 9800gt isn't the smart choice. The GTS 250 which is equal to 4850 is about 100£, so it's a step up in price.

I'm gonna level with you, I'm not that fussed because I don't play computer games much. My computer will take it, it's a music workstation so it's stripped and optimized.

This is my psu; http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1015220333.1261920211@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccdjadejehjkdlmcflgceggdhhmdfog.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=621585&category_oid=-28017

If this is the one: http://jeantech.com/500.htm

It should work. I can't guarantee anything, never heard of the brand nor have i read a review about a product from that company. <- This is why i'm hesitent. Since i don't know how well made the product is.

It probably will work, but i can't guarantee how healthy it will be for your psu.

It's pretty low on the 12V

Yep, very true. I would prefer seeing a single 30amp rail.
