Going 3D

Featured Replies

Recently I felt like trying something new. So I got Zbrush 3.5 and I've been slowly learning how to work with it in the past few days.

Here's my first presentable result, a female torso. I found out it's pretty hard to get good colors on a 3d model :-|

That's kind of disturbing but yeah the result looks pretty good. Isn't Zbrush more for sculpting though?

Haha yeah I know.

Zbrush was just for sculpting but in version 3.5 they implemented tools to create base meshes and skin (zSpheres).

Here's a nice video that shows the process (don't let it fool you, it's a bit harder than it seems <_< )

You should try out Blender. I would recommend using the unstable version if you're just playing around and not using it for serious work.

You can find the latest builds of the unstable version here.

Hmm personally I dislike programs like Blender because they feel too rigid, not organic ...

The only real drawback of creating a model 100% in zbrush is that you can't really use it for animation afterward.

However I'm learning how to work with the mentalray renderer in Max.

I think it's great, except the texture :/

I think Zbrush is a good program for you, especially since you have a lot of experience with digi-painting. Good job on the model, I tried zbrush a while back and it is a lot harder than it seems.

Well let me put it this way :

Blender = technical

Zbrush = freedom to create straight away without having to worry about a billion non-intuitive sliders/settings/numbers/etc..

I'm not saying programs like Blender are bad or useless, but they're really not my kind of thing. I might have to learn how to work with them out of necessity later, but I'd rather avoid it if I can.

It doesn't really sound to me like you've used Blender, not the alpha version anyway. (They've completely redone the interface)

Hmm maybe it's because I remember an older version of Blender. Could be better now idk.

Either way, I don't really see the point in learning blender instead of zbrush

Hell yeah I do. Whats your msn?

That's how it all starts.

Next he's going to ask you what flavor of candy you enjoy and whats your favorite color van.

I tried the "Noob to pro" thing back when I didn't know anything about Blender... To be honest I wouldn't recommend it. You end up being so confused about the interface, because the explanation of it there is like 5 pages long. If you can learn how to use the interface and get the basic terminology down (Mesh, polygon, face, edge, vertex, diffuse color, specular color, raytrace, reflection, refraction, UV map, modifier, constraint, compositing/texture/material nodes- Those are good to start with) you're pretty much in business.
