numerous questions from a returning old player

Hi, just to start i'm not completely oblivious to everything to do with runescape but just to put it into perspective when I stopped playing I think castle wars has just been released and that was about the time I lost interest in the game. Since then there have been ALOT of changes which will take a long time to get to grips with, so in order to somewhat speed up the process I'm asking you guys for help. I apologize in advance if any of my questions seem too obvious, or ignorant to other posts, or otherwise in any way offensive. They aren't in any way meant to be :)

Basically, i'd be looking to start a new character because I think alot of the game has changed and I'd really just like to experience it again. My characters never had any amazing stats (All around 50-60, with possibly a few 70s) so it's not like i'm missing out on much by playing them on my return. I have no items of value on those either, because if I remember right when I decided to quit I gave away whatever small fortune I'd amassed to my closest RS friends, none of whom seem to be still playing!

After looking around the forums I think I'd like to make a ranged pure, my idea of this would to be 1 defence with as high ranged as possible. However, I've seen alot of posts here about characters with 40 def and 20 def and also ranged and mage hybrids. There are also range tanks and 2H characters apparently. Would it be viable to play a character that has 1 defence, no combat level altering magic and just focuses purely on ranged? The idea of using a 2H also doesn't seem very appealing to me. Secondly, would it be viable to start straight off with a pure ranged character? I understand the trouble with not having any money or skills to make money off of to make ranged easier, but I'm not bothered about perhaps having to skill a craft before doing any ranging in order to make it alot easier. If I'd need to level a craft, are there any recommendations? Bare in mind I'd be starting off as F2P, but if it started to progress I'd 100% be going to P2P.

Hopefully this will be enough to start, I may have more questions in the future. I hope you're able to understand through all my blabbering what i'm talking about and asking :) Thanks in advance.

Ranged is more doable now, especially with the addition of crossbows other than the phoenix cbow to the game. However, all good crossbows are members only. The best way to make money nowadays is through combat, and its becoming more and more so, with the pvp world drops and all the high level monsters you can hunt in teams that have been added since you quit. If you are looking to make money to support pure ranging, its easier to start off as many characters around Lumbridge will ask you to do menial tasks (like getting them 20 cooked shrimp, 10 leather gloves, etc) and will be a few hundred or even a few thousand gp. If you want to make money skilling, selling raw materials (raw fish, logs, ore) on the grand exchange (which is the way things are traded mostly now, especially smaller things) is the best way to make money skilling.

Hope that helps, I'll check back if you have any other questions.

Thanks for the fast response, I've seen a few posts around about methods of making some quick early cash on the GE (as i'm learning to call it :D) from a very early level which should be helpful. I think for me it will just be getting to grips with the whole game again really, it's weird even walking around Varrock. I'm starting to see things the way I did oh so long ago again though. I'm not sure of more questions thus far, hopefully i'll get a few more replies then I can maybe remind myself of some stuff I meant to ask initially.

For example, would it not be viable to say take up a craft like mining or wcing and just sell my spoils to the GE? I'm quite patient if it's efficient, something I could do knowing i'm actually working towards a goal

Since the GE came out, its gotten a lot easier to trade raw materials and smaller items, and raw materials shot up in price. People will pay well for Yew logs, to work on fletching or firemaking, ore/bars for smithing, and fish for cooking. Other than combat, those are probably the best way to make money. You can either choose between using those materials for experience or selling them, but you said you wanted to sell for money.

I remember when I came back after my 2 year RS break, I never thought I would play again. I started in about August 2004, played for about 2 years, then quit for while. During that time, the GE was introduced, and PKing was taken away. However, right after I came back, PVP worlds were introduced, so I decided to stay.

I've seen as well that the wilderness was 'removed', how exactly does pvp work now? I tried asking someone ingame whilst levelling and they just told me 'I dunno'. Much easier to find answers on here :D

PVP works so different right now.

First of all, there are PVP worlds, where you can roam some cities and can be killed. Not the best thing. As you will get killed only after a minute.

Secondly, there is Bounty Hunter. You enter a volcano (I thought it's called Wilderness Volcano) and you are either a hunter, or the hunted. You get a person with a arrow above his head, wich is the person you have to kill. Nothing more, nothing less. When you kill your prey, you can keep his/her items.

I don't do PVP much, so there are better people who can talk you in.

Basicly the whole PVP is not the same as you left.

About moneymaking: choose a working skill wich you enjoy. Fishing, Mining, Woodcutting etc.

Although you have to level quiet some time to get to the point the money comes in more often.

Fishing is lobsters and swordfish in F2P. There is only one spot I remember and that's on Karamja. No bank nearby.

Mining still works good. Coal is still in high demand, and the Mining Guild is also available in F2P. Bank in Falador.

Woodcutting is profit when you come to yews. Nearby Falador en Varrock are some good spots for yews.

You are only sort of right.

Anyway, there are PVP worlds where everyspot is open (except some safe areas such as banks) and there are Bounty worlds where players can only roam through the Wilderness or Edgeville. Protect Item prayers are disabled except for Bounty (+1) worlds, and you no longer get your opponents drops but calculated drops through a complicated formula based on what your oppponent was wearing, what his level was, etc. It is abused a lot, but not as much as it used to be.

The Bounty Crater you described was introduced after the Wilderness was taken away but before PVP worlds were introduced to make players happy. After PVP worlds were introduced, the Crater wasn't used very much, and was eventually dropped in favor of the Bounty Wilderness only worlds.

thanks thus far for your replies, very helpful for me. played a bit today, whilst it's still early on I do feel as if i'm getting into the swing of RS again. I'm encountering alot more friendly/well-mannered players than I did before as well, which is surprising.

Another thing to ask, if I could be a member as of now is it really worth it for me as a low level ranged pure? Or am I better off waiting a while? I'm guessing that it's better to be safe than sorry and just go ahead and subscribe, because it makes everything easier, but just to clarify :)

Either way is fine, just depends on how connected you feel to your money. There are definitely more options for ranged in members, for free players you're essentially limited to bows because the only crossbows are phoenix and the regular, which aren't too good. Bows aren't used much anymore either, most high level rangers you'll see will use rune crossbows.
