When exactly does the prayer have to be active to block damage?

 

I used to be really good at pray flashing, but at some point during an update to prayer it didn't seem to work anymore.

 

Right now, I'm anticipating when they're going to to attack and the keep my prayer until the second I see the attack animation stop and then I turn my prayer off. However, it seems more like I have to keep it on for when the actual hit indicator appears on me.

As soon as they attack, you need to have the prayer on. You can turn it off before the attack animation is finished, even. It shouldn't be too hard to test TBH...

You can turn off your prayer the moment you see the attack animation start, you don't need to wait for it to end.

Oh sorry, I made a mistake. I'm waiting until the animation starts, turning it off for the duration of the animation, and then trying to guess when to turn it back on. However, I'm still getting hit. I guess I should try this on a slower attacking monster than abby specs, but I know others are able to do it.
