D.A.R.E.

Yea, I just had a thought...

I didnt even realize this program still existed, which was absent minded of me, but anyway... I remember taking this [cabbage] back in like 5th grade, when I really didnt even know what the different drugs were. I knew what drugs were, but I couldnt have told you back then the difference between coke or H. and things along this line. Granted, I suppose it educated me, but how close of attention are you gonna pay at that age, and what are you really going to take in, and set as morals?

I was drinking and smoking weed at a young age, but I grew up around the [cabbage] in the family and what not, but I wasnt turned on to other drugs, much harder drugs, until I probably reached highschool.

Dont you think it would make more sense to run D.A.R.E. programs to highschool students than some 10 year olds? I dont really even think D.A.R.E. does anything at that age.

I couldn't even tell you what D.A.R.E. stands for... but they gave me a nifty t shirt back in like 4th grade

I dunno, I'm faded right now... what do you all think?

Like you said kids can be introduced to it at a very young age, Ive seen kids sniffing paint around the age of 10.

From what I have heard from youth workers, the programs have been getting much better over the past 5 years.

I think something is better than nothing, although in my experience some of the programs, I find, (like you) to be laughable.

Are you trying to say that I'm more likely to take drugs than a 10 year old? :P

They did that at my school when I was in 7th grade. I found it really boring. I think it's better to teach kids that drugs are bad at a younger age (i.e. 9-13). I noticed in middle school kids kinda tried to do what was cool (not me... I could care less what people think of me). In highschool I've kinda noticed kids do what they think is cool (not what everyone else thinks is cool).... Well in my school anyways.

So I think it should be taught at a younger age to show kids what could happen if they take drugs (I'm not one to preach against alcohol since i love watching others get drunk  ). They need to know that just because others do it doesn't mean they should too.

I had it in 6th and 7th grade. Most of the kids seemed to listen to the instructors pretty well. Although, I'm not at that school anymore so I can't tell you how much of an effect it had on the other kids, but I did keep the D.A.R.E classes in mind the first time I tried drugs. It really does stick with you. Most kids are mature enough when they're in 5th, 6th, or 7th grade to know what drugs are and they need to be educated on the facts about them. I think D.A.R.E programs at such a young age are a very good idea.

Drug Alchohol Resistance Education = D.A.R.E

Yea, it's a good thing to have for the younger people to acually know what they are. But it almost seems as they want to brainwash you to not take them. And it works! :P

and like I said, it's been around in my family. What about the kids who don't come from that kind of a home?

I'm sure they've watched enough TV by then to know what drugs are. All children at some time in their lives need to be informed about drugs and the affects they can have on your life. Might as well try to teach them while they're still quite impressionable.
