Elf Spice
I'm looking for some clarification on how these attacks work without protection prayers. From what I've heard, your total defence from a magical melee attack is 70% of magic level * magic defence + 30% of defence level * melee defence Likewise, inherent defence from a magical ranged attack is 70% of magic level * magic defence + 30% of defence level * ranged defence. Is this correct? Let's say I'm up against a lvl 133 mysterious shade, which attacks with both magic and magical ranged with equal frequency. Would deflect mage be the better curse to use, as I have less magic def than range def?
Zaaps1
Wait...shades use magic-based range? Since when? Well, assuming that it is, here's what I would do. I'd look at my melee/ranged defenses. If my melee defense is higher, I'll pray ranged. If my ranged defense is higher, I'll pray melee. But before I do that, I'd get a Leather Body. ~It's Super Effective! Yep, shades are basically the waterfiends of Daemonheim, only more annoying. IIRC, their blue attack is magic and their yellow-green attack is magical-ranged.In a rush, I have 0 armor. So that leaves me with 0 magic and 0 ranged defence. I think deflect magic would help better though slightly, but I'm not 100% sure.

Come now, you're 89 Dungeoneering, so you must have a weapon + armor or weapon + hood bound. For the record, the hood gives about 10 more defense in melees than ranged. So I would pray ranged. Also, you have those scraps of armor you pick up from monster drops. Even something like Gallileather Top or Chaps would make a huge difference. ~It's Super Effective! W9fearsmycrashers
I use a hood/spear combo so when it comes to shades i use range deflect since the hood gives mage defence and if i am correct yu'd take more damage from range, using no armour is a bad idea for pvp combat but when you are already blocking one style and they cant use the other I think yu'd be safer with taking the magic damage. Hegel
Shades' magical ranged and magic attacks are equal in frequency and damage, and are based on your magic defence. Hence it does not matter whether you pray mage or range (assuming that there are no other monsters) as either way you will block an average of 50% of the damage. Magical ranged is not based on your ranged defence but your mage defence: if you wear metal armour and pray against mage you will find that you get hit by the ranged attacks almost all the time. NastyJenny
I find this to be best : pray depending on the other monsters in the room. Mage if there are other mages present, range if zombie, rangers.
