Recommended Posts

Lately my internet explorer has been acting weird. it says i'll need a certain version of IE if i were to browse that certain website.

and i'm pretty sure my IE version is 6+

-which i double checked on help>about internet explorer

version: 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.050301-1526

cipher strenght: 128-bit

product ID:55736-278-3912193-04599

update versions:; SP1; Q810849; Q813951; Q828750; Q330994; Q824145; Q832894; Q837009; Q831167

When i go to, say, hotmail.com? it says my IE version is not high enough, that i must have at least IE 6+.

do you think it's possible that i might have messed up with some settings and caused this? i'm reaaaally lost

help appreciated

Restart your computer after making these changes, then follow on below.

You are only running Service Pack 1. You need to update to Service Pack 2 before doing anything else. UNINSTALL your antivirus application then please run Windows Update and get Service Pack 2 aswell as all the critical patches. After you have updated Windows, restart your computer then reinstall your Antivirus software, and make sure you run an update on it. Run a full scan with your antivirus software then post a new HiJackThis log.

a few questions:

1] how do I "remove" the entries?

2] by "antivirus application" do you mean like ad-aware SE or Norton Antivirus or something?

3] and when I try to go to hotmail, this appears:

same with microsoft.com and who knows what else.

thanks

In HiJackThis you run a scan then put a tick in the box next to each entry I listed above, then click the Fix button.

I mean your antivirus software, Norton. The other software you listed is called anti-spyware software, it doesn't stop virus's.

We'll ignore that IE error for now until you get everything else sorted out. Do what I said in my post above and get those Windows updates.

Sorry for the stupid questions  and thanks for the help so far!!

Well did you buy a cd substriction? Then find your cd to install that way.

To uninstall Nortan go to start>programs>Nortan icon> click the uninstall icon

If there isn't one go to start>controll pannel> add/remove programs> then find nortan and click remove.

Make sure before you remove it you have a copy to install afterwards.

Control panel --> Add or Remove programs --> remove Norton.

To install it back you should have a cd if you bought it...

Q, why would you want to uninstall Norton?

I could understand if you were loopholing the registration (once your reg expires, uninstall put it back on) but if that's not the case then, why?

I do not have the Norton CD to install it back. You can't download it on the net, can you? or should I buy one somewhere ;l

Hm, I don't agree with Sharper 100% on removing the AV.

It could be a good idea to do so but I never did and my system is fine.

If you run into trouble you can get it elsewhere. Although the legality of that is ah, questionable. And I get the feeling you'd probably run into trouble trying - unless you know someone with an install cd for it.

I think the point of removing and then reinstalling it is to integrate it with the windows security center that comes with SP2 correctly, without too much trouble. I didn't have any trouble with that either, though, it detected my AVG installation fine, and just used that. :)

Yeah this is what I was thinking. From earlier messages from Microsoft it was recommended to remove your Antivirus software while doing the Service Pack 2 upgrade. But perhaps Microsoft have fixed Service Pack 2 now so it works with other antivirus software during the upgrade. This certainly wasn't the case in the earlier stages of it's release.
