um...i don't know what to say

i dont quite get how brushing works...

so you see the grass on the sides of the text thats part of the default brushes with photoshop

so you brushed all that your self? or do you like start with something that uve dled.. and then brush over it or what??? im such a noob at this lol... thx for your help
