I used to play RuneScape several years ago. I played from 2003-2005 or so and then again in 2008. I have had member's before and have a lot of general experience with the game. Recently I saw an ad for RuneScape and decided to check out the website. The game seemed new and somewhat interesting, so I decided to log back in and see what had changed. After noticing that my username and password were NOT working, (this is the first time EVER that this has happened to me, for this game or any other game, no matter how long of a break that I have taken), I also noticed that my character was not even appearing in the highscores. I submitted an account recovery request and my account info was reset nearly instantly. Upon finally logging into the game, I notice that my character's name and gender were both changed. There were also 3 messages in my inbox from Jagex detailing billing information for member's subscriptions this past summer, something I did not do, and the fact that my character was logged in less than 2 months ago, when I havent played the game myself in years. New member skills that I have never even heard of were leveled up. The biggest issue I have is that my partyhat is missing. I dont really know who else to turn to, I couldnt find any info on the website that detailed about what to do in a situation like this. I have an enormous amount of information to prove that this is my account. If anyone could please help me out, post here or send me a message about where I can start or who I can talk to ingame. Thanks a lot, much appreciated.

Unfortunately, there is probably nothing you can do.

 

Make sure to change your password and recovery questions right away, and ensure that your computer is secure.

Lost items are never returned.

You got your account, not much else to do. Jagex will NEVER return items.

Thanks for the responses so far...One other thing just crossed my mind. My bank PIN was not set up. I do remember setting up a bank PIN years back, and if I remember correctly, is it not impossible to reset a bank PIN unless you knew what the number was? The number I had was not something I ever type in, so a keylogger or trojan would be impossible.

 

Also, my entire friends list was deleted, and one new person was added: a moderator. I dont know, something tells me a mod may have been involved, is this type of thing ridiculous to even think of? After all, this account was inactive for a very long time and I know mods can mess with account settings...This whole deal seems extremely sketchy to me.

Bank pins can be reset after 7 days, so that's completely normal if you've been hacked.

 

Was it a player mod or a Jagex mod? Either way, chances are that they were spontaneously met as a friend and the modship is irrelevent, or that the person just added the mod and hasn't actually talked to them.

It was a Jagex staff mod. I was doing some research and came across this article talking about how someone hacked a lot of runescape usernames this past summer:

Does anyone know if this article is just BS or no? It is interesting for me that this article was posted right in the middle of the period when my account was being accessed by someone else (miid - late July). To me, it seems that if this actually happened, active players would probably not be affected much because they would be able to have their bank PIN hold over while they immediately took care of the situation, inactive players would not care because they wouldnt know, and the few formerly inactive players who may have been affected are getting [bleep]ed because there was also nothing I could do to stop this because I also didnt know, but care because I came back to the game. I know hacks like this are extremely rare, if possible, but it DOES happen from time to time...Right now I am just trying to figure out exactly what happened so I dont make the same mistake in the future for something else.
