"Reboot" in Gaming

You know what i would say defines the word "reboot" in Gaming? I will show you all through a scenario: A Game developer works on a game and is pretty much finished with story A and character X, but then he decides he needs to go in a other direction because current choices are not to good. So he changes story A to story B, and character X to character Z. That's what i think what the word "reboot" truly means (or should?) IN GAMING.

In Movies i would say it's a different thing because Movies come and go very fast. For example the super hero Superman is an iconic character for superheroes. So as time passes (perhaps every 20 years) they make a new movie of that hero.

Devil May Cry, a game serie i like has been rebooted and i am not here to complain about it. But i know that i and many other fans like the original character and story and gameplay. All we hoped for was changes in form of improvements. But they rebooted the serie AFTER 4 games already out (DMC 1, 2, 3 and 4).

Which leads to my second point - game companies use the word "reboot" so that they can make a new game but label it with the name of a previous successful game so that they can attract players and thus earn more money.

My third point, what defines a reboot in Gaming, and where is the boundary between reboot and new game?

What do you think of the word "reboot" in Gaming?

I think it's a crap word. For example Legend of Zelda Link has green hat thing, green clothes and blonde hair. And a sword. That's the image i get of "Link". So in Wind waker? when they went all Cartoonish i thought "That's fair, it's same Link".

Another example, Mario is a plumber with red hat and mustache. Let's say they changed Mario into a guy with Al Capon hair and he is now an car mechanic. In my and many other minds Mario will always be the plumber with red hat.

I think the Prince of Persia series is a great example of a reboot. They took a classic game from 1989 and rebooted the franchise in 2003 with the Prince of Persia series that we are all most are familiar with. Rebooting in video games, follows the same basic principles as it does in any other form of entertainment media like movies, comics, etc.

That's a example of reboots doing because of technology. For example Tomb Raider reboot (new one) looks much better graphically than previous Tomb Raider games, and Tomb raider girl is around same character. I think the word "reboot" would be very appropriate for that prince of persia scenario.

So let's see:

1. Rebooting at an early stage of game development

2. Rebooting because of technology (Prince of persia classic game>2003 Prince of Persia)

That's two scenarios of when the word reboot would fit most.

Then there is:

3. Reboot done only to gain more money (An unecessary reboot).

DmC is a good example of reboot scenario #3 because a spokesman said "If DmC goes well we might continue on that, if it goes bad we will go back to making a original DMC serie sequel (DMC 5)". Even fans do not want the rebooted game "DmC" and expected same gameplay, story and characters just with a bit more innovative stuff.

I agree. I hate to admit it, but the new Dante looks like he should be in a screamo band or something, not on the cover of a game. The older Dante is quite honestly a bit of a badass compared to this guy. I loved the PoP games, so to be honest this new DmC is a bad 'reboot'....despite the fact the last game came out in 2008.

Many believe that the 1980 eruption of Mt. Saint Helens was a catostrophic geological event, in reality it was the day that Jimi Hendrix returned to Earth from the next world and actually stood up next to a mountain and chopped it down with the edge of his hand.

Just a note really: the correct terminology is 'Retroactive Continuity', oft shortened down to 'Retcon', which is when established facts are changed, or altered if you will. For instance, your Mario example: if Mario became like Al Capone and a Car Mechanic then Mario would have been 'retconned'.
