JohnnySmum
Heya :) The purpose of this post is to allow everyone to post their favourite poems. Hopefully it will help to reveal some good pieces and show an aspect of poetry that you haven't seen before :D . I'll start the list off with a couple of my favourites. First, there's the famous Wilfred Owen poem (he wrote this a few weeks before he died in the trenches of the first world war) - Dulce Et Decorum Est Bent double, like old beggars under sacks, Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge, Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs And towards our distant rest began to trudge. Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind; Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots Of disappointed shells that dropped behind. GAS! Gas! Quick, boys!-- An ecstasy of fumbling, Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time; But someone still was yelling out and stumbling And floundering like a man in fire or lime.-- Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light As under a green sea, I saw him drowning. In all my dreams, before my helpless sight, He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning. If in some smothering dreams you too could pace Behind the wagon that we flung him in, And watch the white eyes writhing in his face, His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin; If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs, Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,-- My friend, you would not tell with such high zest To children ardent for some desperate glory, The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori. And another of my favourites, a poem by Malcolm Boyle. He wrote this before the D Day invasion, and was killed in action less than a fortnight later - If I should never see the Moon again Rising red gold across the harvest field, Or feel the stinging of soft April rain As the brown earth her hidden treasures yield, If I should never taste the salt sea spray As the ship beats her course against the breeze, Or smell the dog rose or the new-mown hay, Or moss and primrose beneath the tree, If I should never hear the thrushes wake Long before the sunrise in the glimmering dawn, Or watch the huge Atlantic rollers break Against the rugged cliffs in baffling scorn, If I have said goodbye to stream and wood, To the wide ocean and the green clad hill, I know that He who made this world so good, Has somewhere made a heaven better still. This I bear witness with my latest breath, Knowing the love of God, I fear not death. So join in and post you favourite poems or works of literature :) . Cloaked_Shadow
this is a poem by me :) The War our defenses were crushed, out of skin our blood gushed, the war was a horrible thing. the clan we fought, was strong but naught, an extremely easy foe. our swords broken, our bows asunder, what could have caused this terrible blunder? our purple capes were dyed red, by the blood we had shed, our allies had then run and fled. discretion was our only chance, I don̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t know how it happened. we sent a spy, for information, their minds and swords were unsharpened. they tried to fight, we were too strong, their armor breaking, a metallic song, it felt so good, to have done wrong. the battlefield reddened, by the blood, the battlefield washed away, by a magic flood, we have won! we have won! to all our fellows we say: we have won! the last fight for the day. The Suicide i walk carefree through this town, my foot falls make, no sound, people hide, at my quiet stride, the rules of this place, i do not abide. why people hate me, i do not know, long ago, i vanquished a powerful foe, now, i say, my life must end. i cannot continue, this horrible trend, to hell, my life, god will send, my black armor, glistens in the sun, to watch this, my foes said, this will be fun, standing on an icy hill, i do stride, underneath this dark, is a soft deer hide. it must end, i say under breath, awaiting this disastrous death, my sword is hung, on my belt, but, for my dagger i felt. it plunged down, down, deeper, the hill looked, now, much steeper. i say , under a terrible frown, goodbye, enemies, fearful town, with wide eyes, they watch, all my foes, then and there, my life sadly slows. ... mrfish
Stairway to Heaven By: Jimmy Page + Robert Plant There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold And she's buying a stairway to heaven And when she gets there she knows if the stores are all closed With a word she can get what she came for And she's buying the stairway to heaven There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure Cuz' you know sometimes words have two meanings In the tree by the brook there's a songbird who sings Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven It makes me wonder, Makes me wonder There's a feeling I get when I look to the west And my spirit is crying for leaving In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees And the voices of those who stand looking It makes me wonder Really makes me wonder And it's whispered that soon, if we all call a tune Then the piper will lead us to reason And a new day will dawn for those who stand long And the forest will echo with laughter And it makes me wonder If there's a bustle in your hedgerow Don't be alarmed now It's just a spring clean for the May Queen Yes, there are two paths you can go by but in the long run There's still time to change the road you're on And it makes me wonder Your head is humming and it won't go because you don't know The piper's calling you to join him Dear lady can you hear the wind blow and did you know Your stairway lies on the whispering wind And as we wind on down the road Our shadows taller than our souls There walks a lady we all know Who shines white light and wants to show How everything still turns to gold And if you listen very hard The tune will come to you at last When all are one and one is all To be a rock and not to roll And she's buying a stairway to heaven
