SSD's

So the prices of hard drives skyrocketed, and Christmas just passed so I thought it would be the perfect time to buy. To start off I am planning to buy an SSD, roughly around 60gb, just enough to hold windows 7 OS. Currently these are the ones I am interested in buying but I need help to separate the good from the bad. I am looking for speed, reliability, and quality (aren't we all)

I really don't have a reason to buy over 60-70gb so if any recommendations are made please keep it around the 100$ mark give or take about 20-30 dollars and within the specified Gb range. Also if you can, elaborate on what the Controller (eg. SandForce SF-1222, SandForce SF-2281) types are and what do they do.

I'd really like to get my baby up to the 7.0+ mark.

Any advice, suggestions, and recommendations are welcome.

Crucial M4 definatly.

Just a note, you'll want to change the RAM setup you've got going at the moment. SandyBridge uses dual channel controllers so for best performance you want 2x2Gb or 2x4Gb.

It could have, but it is next to impossible because it also could have been caused by the flying spaghetti monster, or one of the other infinite number of deity possibilities.

You are very correct with the dual channel controllers, I have a pair of 2x4gb on the way right now that should be arriving tomorrow. Also the fact that if i plan to go up to 8+ GB I can purchase another pair.

Just to point out that you might run out of space pretty fast if you go with 60GB since Win 7 takes a lot of it already, even if you install your programs on another drive.

Not really, W7 only takes up about 15GB with SP1 installed, might be slightly more for Ultimate. That leaves plenty of space for programs that can actually benefit from an SSD.

Space Sniffer is a good program to use to find out what's using up all your space and how big your Windows folder is at the minute.

I know what you mean but even on this hard drive with a 60gb (58.5gb available) partition and my previous installs I have around 15 gb of free space left. It's possible that I would run out of space but I'm not sure if I'd need the extra space, unless of course there is one that is worthwhile from a gb/$$ standpoint. The extra money could go into another SSD that I could use for my other setup.

My Win 7 drive is 40g and it's not bad to deal with, since it is an older one I have to keep it 25% empty as well. Newer ones you shouldn't have to worry about that as much.

EDIT:

I wouldn't suggest getting a 40gb one now though, definitely should go for 64gb at minimum.

Crucial M4 works like a dream. Thanks for the suggestions.

There is a problem with the M4s at 5000 hrs. http://www.anandtech.com/show/5308/crucial-to-fix-m4-bsod-issue-in-two-weeks

There should be a firmware fix soon, so just keep that in mind.

Appreciate the heads up, Ill keep my eye open to upgrade my firmware when it comes out.
