Bank Pins are USELESS! Let's let JaGex Know!

 

What the Goal is-

Our goal is to inform jagex that they need to fix their Bank Pin system!

 

Why does this matter? -

 

Lately there have been lots of mass hackings (Swiftkit) and I my self have noticed that almost every runescape designed keylogger/RAT has a "bankpin stealer", a bankpin stealer basically either takes videos, pictures, or GIF images of the screen when we type in our bank pins, therefore rendering bankpins useless.

 

We are supposed to trust in the system that is designed to keep our hard earned items safe, How can we have faith in a system that is flawed?

 

 

How will we accomplish this? -

 

The actions in which we take are important, if we do not get JaGex to realise the flaws nothing will happen,

 

The plan is to send a mass email to JaGex With the following message

Dear, JaGex

 

This is a petition where myself and other members have decided to contact you.

 

It has come to our attention that there are a lot of viruses that have something called a "Bankpin logger", It takes pictures/videos of your screen if you are infected and try and type in a bankpin. This calls for you to redo your bankpin system so that it is better equipped to keep players online items safe. The bankpin is a last line of defence against hackers and should be stronger than it is.

Firstly, It's up to you not Jagex to keep your computer safe from Viruses and Keyloggers. Jagex tell their users all the time not to download potentially dangerous programs and files from the internet. They also suggest antiviruses which should protect your system should you download something bad. If you get one of them on your system, it is your fault and your fault alone.

 

Secondly, how are Jagex meant to change the system? You give no suggestions whatsoever, simply the demand for it to be changed. Whatever system they put in place, a badly downloaded program or file by you, the user, will be able to circumvent it.

 

In the end, bank pins are not useless at all. They are a very good way to protect your bank in the event that your account is breached by a third party. It is up to you to make sure your system is secure when using the bank pin system.

Bank pins work fine, it's not Jagex's fault if YOU are dumb enough to not have good spyware protection and thus get caught by this kind of advanced keylogger.

 

Hackers rarely get passed bank pins because the kind of keyloggers that can do these videos etc. are so intrusive that even the cruddy AVs should flag them up and you likely have to manually accept an installation/permission for them to even work.

I am only brining this up because I saw how many people on youtube got hacked and a few of my friends did and unfortunately I did as well because I made a mistake in using a 3rd party client (Swift kit). I personally think, and have gotten a few people who think the same on other forums, that Jagex should make it better, I only thought of 1 suggestion on how to fix it, and that's to have a 3rd party device (weither it's a phone or something else) be able to unlock the bank pin. But to be totally honest I'm sure Jagex could come up with a better solution than I can.

 

One question you say that bank pins stop third parties form accessing your bank, but don't most hackings come from someone being infected?

There's nothing Jagex can do to make it better, the issue is pure and simple player stupidity. No matter what way you twist it if you get hacked it IS your fault because it'll happen 1 of 4 ways:

1) Keylogger - Your fault for not having decent AV protection which stops these dead.

2) Password sharing - You gave someone you're password and they leaked it/abused it. Your fault plain and simple.

3) A forum database being hacked - Can get you hacked if your forum password matches rs one, which is again your fault for using duplicate passwords.

4) Poor Recovery questions - If the answers are all piss-easy and/or can be easily discovered via forum profiles etc. it is again your fault for not picking secure ones.

 

And yes a lot if not most hackings do come from keyloggers BUT ones that can actual do video/screenshots for bank pin are pretty rare and (as previously mentioned) generally will actively have to get you to approve something to even work. So as long as you don't click 'accept' on any random thing that pops up you should never get one that can hack bank pins. Plus if you have decent AV in the first place you shouldn't get any, at all, ever because they will be blocked.

If you have never been hacked, why does your video claim that you have been hacked due to the swiftkit hacking? (which if I understood the comments from the Swifkit devs, actually required the user to accept a java popup to happen, so the fault is on the user).

 

I would say most 'hacks' come from account recoveries or people being frivolous with their password. I won't deny many people do get their account hacked due to infection, but many of those probably won't take the bank pin either.

 

Against an infection, it is up to the user 100% to protect themselves, as Jagex can have no real control over your actions outside of their game. With non-infection 'hacks', the bank pin works wonders.
