Well my evidence for this is some SAS Survival Secrets show so perhaps they liked to hype it up a bit. As far as I can tell from some quick research (no, not just google) and asking my brother - a fourth year med student. Vaseline can help close wounds like lacerations from barbed wire etc but is mainly used for after care as it allows the wound to heal quicker and application of Vaseline means it is less likely to scar.
