Why? - regular freeze at 1 second intervals.

OK. This doesn't happen often, but it's happening now. When I play, the screen momentarily freezes (perhaps for 0.2 seconds) at regular intervals (just under 1 second).

It doesn't matter if I run or walk, it happens for both.

It doesn't matter if I'm reloading map info or not. I can walk/run back and forth within the same map area, and it still happens.

It even happens during cut scenes.

It happened to me once before, when I didn't have MSN messenger on. When I turned it on, the problem went away. (Apparently, even when off, messenger was trying to access the internet or something.) This time MSN messenger is on.

I've got a pretty beafy Dell, and a 1.5 Mbps DLS connection.

I don't have any background tasks going on (that I know of), like virus scans, downloads, whatever.

Many times, I can even watch a DVD movie and play RS at the same time without having this problem.

Any ideas what's causing it, and how I can fix it?

Have you read and followed the instructions for SUN java in the sticky?

I'm having the exact same problem. I've followed the sticky on sun java, scaned for adware, spyware, viruses, worms and trojens, but I still have the lagg. It doesn't matter what world I log in to or if I have something else running in the background. The lag gets really bad when every I move my character to an area that has other player or npc. I've been dealing with this for about a week and I'm starting to think its something with rs and not my comp because there isn't much else I can do.

Its actually becuase your computer is too fast for the server ( or when they go out of time with each other) this can somtimes happen when the server is under hardly any strain.

To help this, try and actually cause lag. E.g detail high, music on loop, or a server that is futher away from your computer.

Hope this helps

Actually, his recommendation is on track. Turning on RS music always solves the problem. (Though it's a solution I don't like, since I'd rather not listen to those tunes all the time.)

I also found that, if I start a movie in my DVD drive, then pause it (and minimize the video player), the extra load on my computer works too, and RS smooths out.

And I just tried the "more distant server" approach, loading up Sydney. (I'm in Denver), and that worked too.
