When you buy one from someone else, is there a possibility that they used theirs already and when you buy it, you won't get 250 uses? If this is a case, couldn't you use one ring to smelt 5k iron ore as long you traded with your friend every 249? If you have used 249 charges, then buy a new ring, that ring will be destroyed after one use. therefore you don't have to worry about usage.
