Just a sketch I did in the margin of my paper yesterday. It's blown up quite a bit as you can see from the lines on the notebook paper. I don't have much skill with drawing and this is probably the best I've done in awhile. Spent about an 1 1/4 hours on it. And yes, there was a reference but only down to the shoulders..

Edit: Really bored so I decided to pixelize it.

Edit2: Fixed the nose, eyes and various other things.

Edit3: Added shading. Yes there is shading, I think the contrast is too small though.

Edit4: Dunno quite what I did, I just refined some stuff, did some shading. Final product because I like the whole painting/pastel kinda look it has.

Yay, new pixel version.

superawesomesiggynessck6.jpg

Imhomer.png

Hmm, the eyes look a little too small, and there is little to no shading.

It really lacks a lot of detail, but looks promising with a few changes (I would carry on with the pixel one - it's easier to change and looks quite good so far)

Its going good, the only thing is her nose thats a bit strange...

komododabst3cn.png

Yeh, the biggest problem is probably the nose - There are no definitive lines for the nose on the inside - just shading.

Using a line for the inside of the nose makes it look quite amateur - so sort that out first.

  • Author

yeah I know, I just finished fixing her nose. Update.

superawesomesiggynessck6.jpg

Imhomer.png

Aha, right, now; That's better, but still there's no proper shading, and the bottom of the nose is too flat, the transition from bottom to inside is too square, and there lacks any real shape to it other than the basic outline.

Just keep working on it and I think it could come out really well.

It looks good! ^_^ The second, updated version of the pixel is good. The only problem I really have is the bottom part of her hair. It doesn't flow as well as it does in the reference picture.

Yay update! Fixed her hair aswas said and shaded a lot though it seems too light.

superawesomesiggynessck6.jpg

Imhomer.png

The shading does seem a bit too light. I like the shading in the second pixel alot. I'm also talking about the left side of her hair as well. It just seems to stop, instead of flowing down.

Here's my horrible attempt.

Right, here I've tried to, mostly, show you about more gradual shading, bear in mind I started this just after you posted #2 - now you have #3 up which is much better.

The hair has a little detail, but I wasn't too fussed about that.

There is NO BLACK - REAL LIFE = NOT CARTOON - No black.

I know there are a few problems, such as the mouth being a little too big (Lips look like they're pouting) and I really couldn't get a colour for her lips, but the main thing I was focusing on was shading in other parts of the face and neck, and the nose.

EDIT: It doesn't seem to be showing up that well. >_<

I think it will do if you zoom in though.

^^No offense but that kinda hurts.

Anyways final product, I think I'm going to keep it like this. I like the whole painting/pastel look.

Err... Sorry?

I didn't mean to offend, was just trying to help. =|

The final product is great, but the only thing is the shirt is a little too dark?

  • Author

No offense taken, it's just wierd knowing the person and then seeing that.... :?

Yeah, I may change the shirt though.

Obviously it looks nothing like her, its just an edit to show some techniques

Probelms with yours: Too many unnecesary colors. Compare the color you want to use to all the others you'be used perviously in the sig. If another color resembles the color youre choosing, use the color alreayd in the sig instead.

Overdithering. Alot of people do this. Dithering is used as a texture, and to blend colors when you use very few. Dithering isn't supposed to be a universal pixel technique that is to be used in very piece. Only use dithering when you need to blend colors that are different in a way thats veyr apparent to the eye. If you cant tell its dithered, it doesnt need to be. Otherwise, only use when you need a rough texture. You dithered almost everything and got almost no effect. No one can tell if you dither or not because the colors didn't contrast enough (though you shouldn't really dither this kinda piece almost at all). Dithering that you did in the shirt is useless.

Jagged edges. Remedying this on the black, I AA (antialiased) look it up, and zoom in on what I've done. Notice I used prexisting colors.

Those are the big things. That and anatomical structure, but I could go on forever on that. Go rent a book of anatomy.

Thanks for reading, hope this helps.

Omg! that's a man! :wall:

ontopic: I like the woman pretty sweet pixelized. Can't see much of the shading and the nose is just... :x

AAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGHHHHH! My eyes!!!!!!!! :x

Lol, anyways thanks for the C/C and example Godslayer. Took some of your advice and got this:

personpixelsmallexperiment9jh.png

I really noticed what you said about dithering and I tried to use it to blend colors in transition instead of an using it to make an entirely new shade.

I can see where you're coming from with the idea of too many colors but I think that's more personal preference and style. Personally I like to use a lot of shades.

I tried to do some AA but couldn't manage to get it right, especially around the chin.

You also mention anatomical structure. When I did the pixel version, I actually traced over the original reference version that I'd scanned into my computer. I guess that means that the reference person has anatomical issues?

superawesomesiggynessck6.jpg

Imhomer.png

It would seem that your drawing was the source of anatomical inconsistancy. I'm glad you liked my CC.

Yea, I made her look wierd, didn't I? Shoulda put 'ARR I must feed!!!' next to it. But, thats just because I had no reference, it wasn't the techniques I described that did it.

Yeah, anatomy problems inthe drawing is believeable (OMG I can make the most 1337 stick figures!!!!!!). Lol anyways, I understand that I had an advantage with having the reference and everyone else not.
