How to block Ads effectively. [Mini Guide]

Featured Replies

Attention: Do NOT block the Ads over RuneScape's free servers. This is what makes the Free Game run, if you block these JAGeX will lose money, and will be unable to keep the free game running. Please do not do this, it is against the rules too.

How to block those annoying Ads, Commercials etc.- By Tmmmey / Arrow

1. Go download FireFox (FF).

2. Then go here and download AdBlock Plus.

3. Restart FireFox after installing it, then find yourself a victim, one of those hairy Ads

who ruined your childhood, and made you have nightmares at night, those.

Adblock Image: Only blocks this image, if you reload the page they have a new picture ready for you. So do not do this.

Adblock Link: Will block the link this Ad leads you to, not really smart. You'll still see the bugger.

Adblock iFrame: Yes, this one is the correct one. This one blocks the source of the image. Meaning the source won't be able to show those buggers more. Yay! Click!

4. Now. Block the source of the crapper, instead of blocking just the crapper. I used to just press add filter, and it never really worked out. So block the source of the thing. Look below:

You'll have to block the Ad again, if it comes from another host next time you refresh.

5. Press "Add Filter". There you go!

Should be in Tech and Computers, though I don't think people should be blocking JaGEx's advertisements anyway. You only see it if you don't pay.

edit: Sorry, I thought I was in General P2P and not in OT

I was under the impression that adblock had some problems with it? Namely a memory leak.

Also I have found it's pretty poor for blocking things, there's no heuristic functionality. You have to have already blocked the host (which you might as well have done with a HOSTS file) and have seen an ad from them once before. The one I use will block anything that it thinks could be a banner... Based on the image size/type, the code used to load it and various keywords in the host URL.

Mine even blocks google text ads, don't ask me how - I didn't even set up a filter for that.

The other option to block ads is to use lynx.

Some people are changed by being a moderator. I wouldn't be.

Please do move it if it is in the wrong section.

It's not really advanced or anything. It's merely for people that are new with this, and want to get rid of some Ads. If you really want to get it done, I am sure there are better ways. This works great for me though, thought I'd share it.

Absolutly not true - rougly 100,000 members that play runescape, $5 each character makes it $500,000 a MONTH! Dont tell me Jagex cant afford to keep freeworlds open just because a some choose to block ads...

Yeah, because all JAGeX has to pay for are servers. Nope, they get volunteers to develop the game, fees and taxes aren't applicable to them either.

Why don't we just use all of those free worlds for members instead since they don't even want to help by JUST viewing ads?

Only way free players can contribute and you don't even want to do it. Pathetic.

Never said f2p shouldnt be subjected to ads. I was attacking his quote about how Jagex wont be able to fund f2p if they block ads, which is not true - they just wont be making as much money.

What would be the point for them to continue running the game then?

How I see it - f2p should be a luring type game. Trying to lure all f2pers to p2p, so Jagex can make more money. Thats how I see it, and all the ads are made due to Jagex greediness..(SP)

So JAGeX Ltd. is acting like a corporation? That's news to me!

The ads are there to help keep the free servers running. Why would there be more servers for free players than members if JAGeX is that greedy?

I already know JAGeX is a corporation, thanks for telling me.

Dont be rude to me.

Because there are more f2pers (more lil kids) playing f2p than there are p2pers...?

Jagex has a business to run. They have to spend most of their income on servers, bandwidth, development, wages, rent for their offices, coffee, hardware, etc. etc. etc.

That's exactly it my friend. You play f2p, you see ads. Pay for p2p, you don't see ads.

Getting back on topic... you might want to try Filterset.G for Adblock (and adblock plus,) that way you get a huge bunch of ads blocked already.

Also, please don't block the ads on any site you care about. If you care about tip.it, don't block the ads. This site is provided for free and I don't know for sure, but I think it's making a pretty hefty loss and someone's paying for it out of their own pocket. Many sites that you visit provide information and services for free and blocking ads negatively affects their finances.

Me personally, I use flashblock to block intrusive flash adverts, and I use Firefox to block popup ads. I block intrusive ads, but I regularly click the text based and image-based ads on sites I care about.

I am not saying, in my quote. That if a few people does block the Ads, F2P will be gone. But you can't think that way, you simply can't. If everyone thought "Oh well, if I toss this on the ground it won't hurt, it's not like the world will go under.". Then if everyone did it, the world would very quickly go under. You have to take responsibility for your own actions, a good way to think about actions is to think "If everyone in the world did this, would it become a better, or a worse place to life?". If everyone blocked the Ads there would be on F2P. JAGeX pays for servers, crew members, hardware, and so much more. Officies, insurance. are just some to mention. I don't care that much, but it is, against the rules too. So don't do it. Simple as that.

theres an extension called adblock filter g or something like that. look at the top extensions and it automatically updates with blocks so you dont have to waste your time
