Dilemma about Pure... kinda...

Ok, I'm f2p, and making an Archer Pure. I plan (or planned) - as a short term goal - to have;

60 Range

20 Defense

40 Magic

1 Prayer

1 Attack

1 Strength

Which would make my pure (according to Tip It's Combat Calculator) level 45 combat.

But before closing the screen, I changed the "20" value to "40" (and the hitpoints accordingly). The new calculation came out as "51".

Here's my question: A lot of people say that I shouldn't get more than 20 defense because otherwise it couldn't really be considered a pure, and getting 40 defense is useless anyway. But, I don't really see what they mean. Wouldn't it, in my case, be worth getting my defense to 40? My combat will only go up a measly 6 levels, which won't really matter because I'm going to be PKing in deep wild, plus I'll get to wear a Dragonhide Body and get a nice range bonus along with a cooler outfit.

So... yeah. Am I right in saying I should raise my defense (it's 20 right now) to 40?

I wouldn't go for any defense at all. Those 'measley' levels can mean a lot, even in the deep wilderness.

I really wouldn't call it an era. It was more of a definitive time period during which dinstinctive characteristics were expressed in similar ways.

I'd say that you should either keep it at one, or get it to 40. 20 has too little bonuses IMO.

The equation for F2P rangers (and P2P) is different to F2P melee or mage, since a melee fighter only gains better defensive equipment, while a F2P mage has nothing at all with any defence requirement.

The ranger gains attack bonuses from better armour...

+6 (over plain leather) for the 10 defence hard leather body.

+6 for the studded leather body at 20 defence - no attack improvement over hard leather.

+13 for dragonhide at 40 defence - if you do not wish to carry more than 40 def, do dragon slayer with 34 (and a bit).

In this case, extra defence levels can also increase attack, though my rough calculation suggests that only 10 defence / hardleather actually comes out on top.

For dragonhide, ignoring the hitpoint effect:

1. 13 higher ranged attack would be 6.5 extra combat levels

2. 40 defence is 9.75 extra combat levels

Since you already have 20 defence, d-hide is +7 over studded

1. 7 more ranged = 3.5 levels

2. 20 more defence = 5 levels

On pure attack grounds, the extra bonus does not fully compensate for the extra combat levels, on the other hand, you also resist damage better - a full dragonhide ranger is pretty tough

you can get upto 52 defence and still be considered a pure

how?

don't get prayer..prayer is the same principe as defence (according to the combat calculator)

so you can easily get 40 def

altough:get 76 ranged and 70 str for ranged/2h koing.

i'm not sure if its a rumor, but i think for the reward for dragon slayer, you get like 12k+ def exp, and 12k+ exp in the attack style you killed elvarg with. so if you killed him with ranged (try a cross bow and anti-dragon shield) you should get a few def levels and some bonus ranged exp

now i'm not exactly sure, so youll want to find out for sure, instead of getting unnecessary combat from att levels. maybe you can ask runescape customer support to make sure. but if youre going for green hides, definitely do the quest before you train up your def
