July 14, 200619 yr where i live there is only 56k (sucks) i saw ads for hughesnet (have direct tv) on the website it says they dont recommend for use for twitch or rpg games. i was wondering if anyone else has hughesnet and how is it. i know it dont match up to cable or dsl but those are not available here. it has to be better than 56k? it has to be. but anyone have any input from what they heard or from experience?
July 14, 200619 yr It looks like hughesnet is a satellite internet service. The speeds look comparable to basic DSL (~700kbps), but the service is much more expensive because it is satellite. Pricing Page They do not recommend you use this service for games because your upload speed is comparable to dialup when using satellite, I believe. (Your downloads will be fine though). And since gaming involves both sending and receiving data packets constantly, satellite is usually not recommended for heavy gaming. It'll do fine for regular internet surfing though. Can anyone back me up? I remember hearing something about the upload speed being horrible on satellite in class, but I'm not exactly sure. And no, I haven't had personal experience with this ISP at all. ==================================Retired tip.it moderator.Teaching and inspiring.
July 14, 200619 yr I have Direcway. DO NOT GET IT. Rainy day- no Internet I have massive problems signing into MSN Messenger. Often (at least once every two weeks) it decides that it's just not going to work and you're stuck with no Internet until it feels like working. It is high speed (not extreme high speed) and that's assuming that it's going to work consistently.
July 14, 200619 yr if you plan on gameing with sat. internet... NO the ping times are TERRIBLE if you get any type of iternet.. get cable, or DSL. Sat. = Worst type of internet... besides dialup. also. Directway, and hughesnet are the same i think. ive seen adverts and they have that same spokeswoman whos a complete tool of a TV personality.
July 14, 200619 yr It's because the upload is indeed done via a normal modem. As Knives669 mentioned it suffers the same problems as GPS - no line of sight = no signal. Some people are changed by being a moderator. I wouldn't be.
