For powermining, you would usually want an ore that you can reliably get in a set ammount of time--always one hit for iron. If you are trying to powermine coal, you'd need to be able to get each coal in no more than 5/3rds the time it takes you to get an iron, otherwise, you are getting less xp per hour than you get from iron. Additionally, you only need 3 iron rocks to keep you busy while powermining iron. If you want to powermine coal, you need 4 or 5 or maybe more to keep up a constant cycle of mining.
