DSL or Cable?

Protocal differences might slow one down over the other, but nothing is going to change the time it takes that signal to travel out and back

Yup, your right about both those things, particularly the second. Which is where 2*10^8 comes in. That's the speed at which the signal is being sent and received at... 299,792,458 m/s

People who say satelite is terrible are ignorant. What do you think your cell phone is using? It's certainly not relaying it from tower to tower when your calling bejing thank you very much.

exactly.. though nowadays with fiber being laid everywhere sats are not used as much.. they use undersea lines more and more for basic IP traffic (all cell phone calls are nowadays packets and not considered sounds till they are recived)

2) Cell signals travel at most 20 miles to hit a tower (If even half that). Big difference when compared to the 10's of thousands your sat signal is traveling.

well your semi right about towers i used to work for Sprint PCS customer service. They actually in meto areas will have your signal divided between 3-10 towers for best quality. (and to insure if your moving to have signals not drop as much)

in rual or not so populated areas you could be connected to just one tower at a time.. but most often i think if you have a wallmart you have multiple tower connections.

The following statement is true. The previous statement is false. 60% of all statistics are made up 90% of the time

andrew i love you & want you to have my babys!!! <3:

Finally, I get to save the Earth with deadly lasers instead of deadly slide shows!

Yea... and what happens after it gets to the tower? ... It doesn't magically go striaght to the recipiant

Just because I have seen mountains of info in general, friends and personal experiences pointing to satelites terrible latency doesn't make me ignorant

Erm... this is just like the people who bad mouth Dell with no real reasons beside "everyone says they suck!11!"

Up/down rates != ping times, but you asked for it anyway, heh. If you want the millisecond times to a site and back, open a up a command line and use the ping command.

I know, but you also said the up and down rates I provided were wrong....

and opening up cmd to ping a site / ip / proxy with a whole... whats the max? Like 12 kb or something? Either way, it would proove nothing.

Mind you I just finished a game of Battlefeild2 with constant 30 ping. This isn't really an argument, this is like the government stating that Area 51 doesn't exist.
