August 24, 200619 yr I can't get a hold of any of my friends and I'm stumped on two problems... If someone could just help... I'll just tell the two problems and what I'm supposed to do... 1. - 9(2x+3) > 10 2. - (2x+3)/5 > 0.03 I just need to solve for "x". I understand them but when I get an answer, it doesn't workout in the problem... Btw, the answer should be like x > answer or something like that...
August 24, 200619 yr 1. X< -2 1/18. Remember, when dividing or multiplying a negative number to the other side of the equation, the greater/lesser sign changes directions. 2. X = -1.575. Same as above. the russians are the best! Hands down!
August 24, 200619 yr For the first one, I got x > -0.94444... I haven't gone back to school yet, math isn't my strong point, and I'm very rusty, so don't go with my advice as a definite answer. There's no sig here. Move it along...
August 24, 200619 yr Author 1. X< -2 1/18. Remember, when dividing or multiplying a negative number to the other side of the equation, the greater/lesser sign changes directions. 2. X = -1.575. Same as above. Your a life saver. I'm usually very good with math, especially algebra but I just couldn't seem to get the correct answer for those problems... I know about the whole changing the direction of the sign but I still couldn't get it... Anyway, thanks again...
August 24, 200619 yr 1. X< -2 1/18. Remember, when dividing or multiplying a negative number to the other side of the equation, the greater/lesser sign changes directions. 2. X = -1.575. Same as above. aha, I got here 1. 9(2x+3) > 10 18x+27 > 10 18x +27 (-27) > 10 (-27) 18x > -17 x > -17/18 what went wrong?

Oh fix the -9 Remember to use the distubutive property with the 9(x2+3). So it would be 9*2x + 9*3

You missed the negative sign on the 9, may be more, but I'm too tired to mess with it now.. even though it is ridiculously easy. Stupid Calc.
August 24, 200619 yr Author It seems right but if you look closely and put x back into the original problem, it doesn't work out...

Oh fix the -9 Remember to use the distubutive property with the 9(x2+3). So it would be 9*2x + 9*3 That's what I did You missed the negative sign on the 9, may be more, but I'm too tired to mess with it now.. even though it is ridiculously easy. Stupid Calc. Didn't notice that minus, thought it was the - "bla bla bla" kinda of hyphon. So... - 9(2x+3) > 10 -18x + -27 > 10 -18x > 37 x > 37/-18 That it? The Windows Calculator is useless, i can't seem to do negative numbers on it
August 24, 200619 yr Author Agh... Sorry... Now I screwed up everyone's answers... It wasn't a negative sign... Hehe... It was just a hyphen... I guess it wasn't the best place to put a hyphen... Edit: On the first one, I reworked it and got it. On the second one, I have a friend helping me. No need to work these anymore unless you need to. Btw, -17/18 was the answer to the first one so I was originally right... Sorry for the "-" sign mix up...

The Windows Calculator is useless, i can't seem to do negative numbers on it That's right, but you didn't even have to distribute the -9 into the equation. You could have divided it into the 10 and gotten rid of it entirely. That's what I did, but your answer is still right. :D the russians are the best! Hands down!
August 24, 200619 yr I solved both equations actually, See if they are right or not, i don't really care because i took that before 2 years! 1. -9(2x+3)>10 -18x-27>10 -18x= 27 >10 x= 27/-18 = -1.5 >10 -1.5>10 2. - (2x+3)/5 >/= 0.03 -2x-3/5 >/= 0.03 -2x/5-3/5 >/= 0.03 -0.4x-0.6 >/= 0.03 -0.4x = 0.6 x = 0.6/-0.4 = -1.5 -1.5 >/= 0.03 I hope you would understand it  !
