How to improve?

Can someone help me on how to make my pics better, here is one i did of a

 

dog bone on a lily pad in the water but if i do more detailed things they always come out bad, can anyone help me?

Hmmm, A dog bone on a lily pad... Idk don't lily pads have some lines going to the middle from the outside edges? The bone might be to bright in some places too.

for a second there i thought i would have to report that picture because it only uploaded half of it but then im like ohhh ok...

 

but yeah lilie pads have lines and i think the water needs some more shading

Here is my pic again after i tried to do some of the suggestions, looks a little messed up because i shaded a raster layer so my background looked darker and that was the best i could do to fix it.
