If the virus is active... as in its an executable file or dll injection, then it would also be in your RAM (or memory sticks as you said) As soon as you turn the computer off, the RAM gets cleared... so the file would then only be on the hard drive. As soon as you turn the computer back on though, the virus would be loaded back into the RAM. If you took the hard drive out and put a different one in, its not like the virus could infect you through your RAM if that's what you were getting at, though that would be a rediculous method to getting rid of a virus. ...
