I'm using on-board sound card, so i am wondering since I use my computer for gaming, should I spend money on getting a sound card? Would I notice a difference in FPS in games since I wouldn't be using an on-board sound card?

Very minimal difference, but if you're a hardcore gamer you'll benefit from having slightly more CPU time.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

To be honest, it maybe is worth getting a small cheap soundcard just to get that extra bit of processing power but I wouldn't bother with something like a SoundBlaster unless you're serious about sound too.

Sound cards help alot with game stability, sound quality, and yes, for gaming performance.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

With onboard, it takes CPU power to process the sound, which is especially dire if you computer isn't that good to begin with; you'll need as much power as you can get. You also get improved sound quality. On board cards can give a lot of background interference, and have lower sound volumes.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Poor onboard sound can also slow down/freeze more demanding games. Bad sound capabilities stuggle to keep up with what's showing on the screen, and can freeze up games entirely. A lot of gaming benchmarks are done without sound, possibly for this reason.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

So in short, the answer is YES. Get whatever you can afford, and research to find what you need. It will pay off.

theres a few other things to take note of aswell. Using a headset, especially for FPS games, is incredibly helpful compared to using speakers, as you get a sence of depth and movement - makes it so much simpler listening for oponents.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

But one thing you'll want to consider, if your getting a sound card with 6.1 / 7.1 DolbyDigital Surround sound, it won't be as usefull unless your using a headset that supports 6.1 / 7.1 surround sound.
