Huge Memory Loss, Help! (And other problem)

1. Ok so my computer has little memory left, but not much on it. Its an 18GIG computer and has like 3GIG left.

Please give me lots of diffrent solutions, and a link or how to do them. Ive done the following...

-Defragment

-Spyware S&D

-Adaware SE

-Nortion 2006

2. I have like 8 entries, they are tracking cookies, come up in all scans and i delete them but they keep coming back. How can i get rid of them permantly?

You know it is possible that you've just ran out of space, that there's no other reason apart from you have too many files. :P

Try backing up older files onto CD/DVD. If you have a lot of movies or music, remove some of the stuff you never watch/listen to.

I had about 26GB left on my 300, I quickly went through my video files and deleted a bunch of shows I hadn't watched in months. Instantly freeing up around 36GB.

Another obvious thing to do is, remove programs that you don't use much. Through Add/Remove programs of course.

Show all files in C:\ and go through every single folder and see how much space it takes up. If you see an abnormal amount of space being wasted, go into every single sub-folder and check to see if it's important or not.

Then again, maybe it's time to get a new hardrive? :P

Just explain to them. As time goes on and computer hardware gains speed and size, so do the programs.

Give them the example of games.

Shadow President is a really old simulation game. It's 16MB. Came on 1CD back in 1994.

World of Warcraft (I know it's an extreme...) is a game from 2004 and when installed on a computer now. It comes in at a whopping 5.8GB.

In ten years the size of games have increased over 300 times what they were.

If that doesn't work, try stomping your feet and shouting "I WANT A NEW HARDRIVE! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!" That used to work. :wink:

Use the windows tool "disk cleanup" to get rid of temp files and compress your old files. Also delete all the old backups of windows accept the most recent, also try turning off the fast-indexing feature, and limit the size of the cache for internet explorer

Try spacemonger :) It lets you know exactly where all your files are and what's using up the most space. Often I find that people's media players are copying imported media into a "library" folder, but leaving it in the old location too (perhaps where you ripped or downloaded the file to) and then you've got duplicated files.

Here's a visual representation of the files on my harddrive. Some names & places obscured.

Oh and there's two main versions of spacemonger.. the old free version, and the new versioin which has a free trial but you can only use it for a month.
