Dramaskus City, a smog-choked edifice of steel and stone on the banks of the Sar Galun river. The furiously beating heart of a dying empire...

A jewel beside the Sea of Fallen Stars, Ventar grows, away from the wars of the west. Whether traders, corsairs or warships, none dare challenge her control of the seas...

Yeah, they're tiny, I know. They're meant to be. They're intended as header pictures for huge slabs of text for my campaign setting.

Comments and (constructive!) criticisms on technique?

looks very nice, small as youve said, but with reason.

probalem witht he size is you cant see it that well, but then it is rather blurred anyway which doesnt help. but lets no go on about the size.

the blurring makes it hard to see at times yet it also gives it motion, which is cool =)

the top one i was like "what the hell?" but yeah, then i read the thing, looks more like an abstract than a city landscape :-s

the bottom one looks nice, i like the boats and the water, and surrounded by the buolt up area. the sails could be more defined since atm they arnt very.

they both look nice but they arnt perfect, nothing is i guess, bet hey.

My style (with digital painting at least) is that it's less about the detail and more about giving just the idea that something is there. In a way, it's slightly abstract, I guess, with things just staying in your vision for a while before you actually recognise the shapes.

yeah i had noticed you wernt the neatest artist =P

Silly man! Details are for pencil work!

If I wanted detail with digital painting without taking obscene amounts of time, I'd get myself a tablet. Or the money to buy one, at least.

I like them but I'm more of a fan of Renaissance style art which this is simlar to but not quite. The mainstay of Renaissance art, especially in Northern Europe, was scrupulous attention to detail (letting my history nerdness out a bit here ). From the way you've done them I feel like you put a lot of detail into the pictures but the blurred them with a layer/brush (don't ask me I only use MS Paint). I'm not saying it's bad, just my personal taste. Extremely well done though. Good job =D>

Actually, there's virtually no detail at all. Everything you see is just slabs of colour with low opacity lineart.

But from your reaction, I take it that the idea I have for my style is working: that you actually think there's detail even when there isn't. =P

I like them.

Also, I don't know if it intentional, but I like the way you made them look busy/peaceful. The first one has a lot of conflicting lines (they aren't all going in the same dirrection as the second one is) and it makes it look a lot more like a busy city.

The second one, on the other hand, looks very calm and peaceful.

Good job :).

Well, now that you mention it, I do know what you mean. =P

I only intended the harsh lines to look like scaffolding, or perhaps railings and platforms along the outside of the towers like in the foreground.

Mind if I steal the second one and use it as my sig? <3:
