Help with Hotel's Internet Wi-Fi!

Recommended Posts

What are you trying to connect with? Does the hotel charge for access? What sort of security does it use? What wifi standard is it using? Where are you in relation to the access point? Are you moving around?

You can't expect us to be able to solve any problem without at least SOME information. It's like me posting saying "my internet connection isn't working - help me".

It is a Dell Precision M70 Laptop, not moving around (Siting at a table). Wi-Fi card is an "Intel® PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Net". Full Signal Strength, it never drops. Unsecured network. It is a free connection.

Seems to be something in the PC not the Wi-fi spot...

Does it work for anyone else? Did you consider asking the lady/gentlemen at the front desk? Maybe somethings up with their service

Last 3 Wi-fi spots I have been to this PC has been "Hic-up"ing the Wi-fi just stops working for like 20 seconds. But the signal never drops.

DaN, That just means you don't need a SN and Pass to log onto that Wi-Fi Spot. No way to have no SN and Pass and still be 100% secured. Trust me, I am not a idiot, I have a Dell Precision M70...

You make it sound like owning a "Dell Precision M70" certifies you as a security expert. Even if it did have an "SN and pass", most (if not all) WiFi security protocols have already been cracked.

First problem. It's a public hot spot. Anyone can use it, abuse it, and overload it with whatever crap they feel like, be they paying hotel guest or your local computer geek. There's nothing you can do about it.

Second problem. It's a public hot spot. We can't help diagnose the problem because you and the rest of us don't have access to the wireless gear the hotel uses. Your laptop may be running perfectly and just getting stuck with crappy wireless hardware on the hotel side. Again, nothing you can do about it.

No I could goto your hotel and see everything!

If you dont need a security code to connect to the network then all data transmitted over the airwaves in sent in the clear (unencrypted).

What if you're connecting to a site with SSL?

What if you're connecting to a site with SSL?

90% of the time you wouldent be using SSL

But if you are using SSL then it will be encrypted while the SSL is in use

but only information to and from the page with SSL enabled will be safe everything else is left open.

I found a SecurityNow podcast that explains open WiFi better

For the internet to work I must go to some website and type in my pass, then it unlocks it. But is not a pass you enter before you connect. This post is about whats happening! Not is my password safe!

That's a gateway password. That means you get access to the internal network without entering the password, but not the internet without entering it. Do you have the password for it?

If it's anything like most hotel's I've been to that offer free wifi, it's nothing more than the room number or something else very simply guessed by anyone sitting in the parking lot.

Yes I have password. Could that stop my internet ever 15 minutes to check to see if I entered it or something?

Am I really me? Am I someone else?"

Can't you just ask the hotel staff?

Yeah, I'm getting all the references.
