You get the basic mage xp for the spell when you train with defense, but the ammount of mage xp you get based on hits is halved (the other half going towards defense). And you just need to be on defensive mode to get defense XP.

You do not have to be standing next to the monster to get defense XP.

My personal advise:

No. It's a waste of runes training defence with magic, train def with melee.

Training only magic the xp goes:

20% to health and 80% to magic

Training magic with defence the xp goes:

20% to health, 60% to magic and 20% to defence

Note:

No need to be next to the monster to win def xp, you can be in a safe spot

What is this "Health" that you refer to?

When you cast a normal spell you earn Exp according to

CastingExp = BaseExp + 2*HitDone

and

HitPointExp = HitDone*4/3

If you are casting with a staff set on Defense style

then the CastingExp is split between Magic and Defense.

Otherwise, it all goes into Magic

Hope this helps
