Prologue:

As she lie on her deathbed with her son by her side, she knew her time had come. Her mind's eye flashed with memories, her childhood, her marriage, her family, and her husband's accident. The pain she felt nulled as she felt herself drifting away, and with one last prayer to God, her eyes closed, she was to never wake again.

PART 1: Denial

Chapter 1:

Ron was devastated. After 17 years of his life his aunt passed away. She was his favorite aunt, he told all his secrets he couldn't tell anyone else to her. He felt alone now, he cried daily, he cut himself to try to make it go away, but it didn't help. He felt alone, like no one was there for him. Thoughts of suicide were daily occurrences, but he knew he wouldn't. He figured in a couple of months he would be ok.

But something was wrong. Every so ofter he would see her, or so he thought. He would see her turning a corner, but when he got there it was deserted. It started at her funeral. As they lowered her coffin into the grave, he saw her in a crowd of people at another funeral. He ran to her as fast as he could, but she wasn't there. His parents figured he was in shock, and needed to see a psychiatrist, but thats when it happened again.

The psychiatrist put him into a hypnotic state. There he had a dream about her. When he woke up he saw her, but the doctor was holding him back, He fought the doctor till he couldnt hold him, but his aunt wasn't there.

After that episode he felt as if he was insane. His mother took him to a hospital, where he was drugged and tested. He was like a caged animal, chained to his bed, he couldn't move. His parents came to visit, but he ignored them. After they put him through all this he couldn't bare to see them, why were they doing this to him? After a week they released him, he was fine. He walked around like a free man again.

Weeks passed without incident. As much as he mourned the death of his aunt, he knew he was getting over it. Everyone was right, it was just a phase. He looked forward to his Senior Prom, he was taking his best friend, Mary Manthas. The big day arrived and he was excited. He had a spring in his step as he showered, dressed, and waited for his date. When they arrived they were overtaken by the usually flurry of cameras, friends, and family. Inside they were having a blast, dancing and being normal kids. During one of the slow songs they kissed. Suddenly Ron's mind exploded, he saw his aunt again, but in reality it was just his date Mary. He hugged her and screamed her name. Mary struggled to free herself but couldn't. He cried and screamed for help, he was hurting her. and the police were called. Ron was taken into custody but was never charged for a crime. Afterwards he plunged back into an antisocial depression that threatened to take his life.

Again his parents tried to take him for help, but he wouldn't go. He was 17 now and they couldn't control him. He just stayed at home, he hid from everyone, he was scared he would hurt them again. His dangerous habits continued. During this time Mary's mother passed away, but he felt no sorrow. Even though he was good friends with her mother, he couldn't bother to show at her viewing or funeral. He still saw his aunt, in the mirror, at the bottom of the steps, but it didn't phase him, he was but an empty shell now. But one day, without notice Mary showed up, she seemed distraught and depressed. Ron didn't care, until she told him why she had come. *She said, "Well you know how after your aunt died you saw her?" All Ron did was shake his head. "Well, since my mother died.... ive seen her also, just like you have." At the moment Ron's eyes widened. He knew that what she had just told them would eventually change the lives of everyone, and lead to one of their demises.

Chapter 2:

Ron stared deep into Mary's eyes. This was no joke. He saw fear and anguish in her eyes, like he saw in his. They embraced and held each other. It is said that traumatic experiences bring people closer than they ever could've been before, they knew it was true. They sat there for what seemed like an eternity, just thinking, was this happening? Why were they both experiencing this? Was it a sign from God, or just their mind playing tricks on them. They finally talked again, and they talked for a long time. Not just about their experiences, but silly things likes Rap music and baseballs. For the first time in many years of friendship, they were more than just friends, they were a couple.

Life seemed better now. While they were still haunted by appearances of the dead loved ones, they kept each other sane. In their times of need they used each other as a crutch. Their scars healed, and they lived a normal life, for the most part. One day Mary asked Ron to join the swim team so they could spend more time together. It became yet another great escape for them. Ron only wished he hadn't decided to join his senior year. He felt safe among his friends, except for one thing. The boiler room is connected to the pool by a long hallway, starting at the door in the pool area. Once Ron tried to get in, it was his first practice and he needed a towel, and he thought that was the closet. When he got to the door he felt the heat coming off the boiler and he heard crying from inside. He tried to open the door but it was locked. Immediately the swim teacher grabbed him and screamed and accused him of trying to break into it. That day she made them do ten extra laps around the pool. Ron just shrugged it off but, he got a sense of unwelcoming whenever he got close to the door.

As time passed they seemed to see the apparitions more and more. Finally they decided to see a psychologist about it, but together this time together. Ron was understandably nervous, he had already experienced the trauma of these tests. But he was willing to do it again now, at least for Mary. Mary's parents wanted to have nothing to do with it, they thought she was faking it. Finally the day of testing came, Ron's parents dropped them off, they couldn't bare to witness the suffering of their child again. The hospital was unusually full of people, almost all of them looked sad, alone, and depressed. When they got to see their doctor they explained everything, how they both thought they were seeing their recently deceased family members. Finally the doctor went to converse with some nurses. When he came back he looked extremely worried. He said. "This may sound strange but, this is the 71st reported case of this in a month. Everyone comes in, just like you, and tell us the same thing, they think they see their dead relatives and such." Immediately Ron and Mary looked at each other, and then they fainted from the shock of their doctors statement.

PART 2: Awakening

Chapter 3

They awakened to the smell of smelling salts. They noticed that they were the only ones who had passed out. The doctor had no explanation for what was happening, a mass panic? No, no one seemed to know each other, it was like nothing he had ever seen. Each case only seemed to be connected by their symptoms, nothing more. After awhile of thinking Ron and Mary decided to be tested, they had to sleep in the same bed, because the hospital had very few beds left. They laid there unrestrained, holding each other in their arms. The doctor figured they needed each other right now, and restraining them wouldn't help at all. They feel asleep together, while the doctor monitored their brain waves, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. He was getting a slight irregularity, but he figured it was just hormones. He left for the night to try and get some sleep, but he would regret that the next day.

The night was still young. As people drifted to sleep the hospital closed. Soon all the patients were in their REM sleep. A door guard was posted outside in each of the hallways and did their job, by falling sleeping also. At once everyone began to have a dream. They all experienced the same one, except each person saw their deceased person in it. They saw their loved one in a dark alley, they ran to greet them. But as they got close they stopped. The persons eyes began to bleed, blood spilled from their eye sockets. They fell to the floor. Each person ran to attend to their loved one. Suddenly they were pulled to the floor. The person they had once loved was different now. Their eyes were black, with red pupils, that seemed to sense fear. That had become shells of their former selves, almost like zombies. The zombie like person got it their feet and attacked the dreamer. They struggled until they could no more. They gave in and the zombie's eyes bleed again as they bit them. The blood dripped into their wound. Agonizing pain, pain they could almost feel, even in a dream, swept over their bodies. They saw black and then, all they could think about was who they could make into one of them. All at once everyone awoke, screaming in their bed. The door guards rushed in to check the doctor's patients, they seemed fine. But to be safe they decided they should let the doctor know of the most recent development.

All at the same time, the doctor's pager, cell phone, and home phone went off at once. He warily reached for his home phone, knowing either the person on the other end was about to tell him one of two things, either they found a cure for cancer, or there was trouble with his patients. As soon as he heard about the incident, he rushed right out to his car, not even stopping to grab a jacket to protect him from the pounding rain. "The shared dream meant something", he told himself. "Many pagans believe that it is the sign that will usher forth a very important step in history, something that would effect everyone". He just kept saying that to himself, it was the only way to help him keep awake from his lack of sleep. He used his satellite phone to call the guard captain. "You must keep all of the patients together. Dont let them leave, i believe this is the beginning of the"..... '

Chapter 4

Suddenly the doctor lost control of his car. In his fear, he couldn't utter out the last of his sentence. His car slid into the oncoming lane, and was immediately hit by a tractor-trailer. The doctor died instantly. Back at the hospital the guard had made a mistake. He let all of the patients go, thinking it was for the best. All at once they rushed off into the night, not knowing what was to come.

PART 3: Epidemic

Ron and Mary ran as fast as they could, the police were following them. They rushed into the forest to lose the cops. After a long while they were lost, they sat on a stump as Mary started to cry. "Whats wrong Mary?" Ron asked. "I don't know, i feel like this is our fault, but it couldn't be, right?" Ron just stared at her, not sure of the answer himself. It was silent for a long time. Finally Ron got up as saw a man, just standing there. "Help, Help were lost!!" he cried, but the man just mumbled. Ron ran up to him, and immediately recognized him as a man in the hospital...

They ran up to greet him, happy to see a friendly face. When they tried to talk to him he just grunted. They questioned and probed him, trying to figure out what was going on. Finally, they saw his face in the moonlight from an opening of the canopy. He was extremly pale, with greenish blue bags under his eyes. When they saw him in the hospital he looked fine. seeing how sick he looked they just decided to keep on going. They walked for another half an hour before they needed a break again. they laid together on a log, trying to ignore their hunger. Slowly they drifted off into sleep.

Ron awoke to Mary screaming. He looked over to see the man they saw awhile back grabbing her. In the morning sun he noticed just how bad he looked. He bent his neck over, green saliva dripping from his teeth. Ron kicked him as hard as he could, the man dropped Mary. He got back up and resumed his attack. Nothing Ron could do would stop him. Finally he was force to kill him with a large, sharp stick.

Mary ran from him, disgusted by what Ron had done, she was a devout Catholic and killing a man was a terrible sin. Ron ran after her, but eventually wore out trying to keep up with her agile body. He walked home in shock, and came into his house, glad his parents were away. Suddenly his house phone and cell phone rang at the exact same time.

Chapter 5

Ron was afraid to pick up the phone. He didn't know what was going on. That day his parents didn't return, no one was around him, he was left to sulk in his sorrows. Missed call after missed call stacked up but he was unwilling to answer them. Finally he turned on the news, but there was nothing. Emergency signals on every channel. Finally he picked up the phone. "Is this Ron?" asked a monotone voice. "Yes, what the hell is going on!" "I cannot explain it here, please hurry to the hospital, its safe here, do not go on foot, steal a car and don't stop, no one living will care."

Ron grabbed his coat and his moms keys and left. When he left he saw three men at the end of the street, pale and sick like the one in the forest. He hopped in the car and sped of, towards the hospital. Suddenly he got a phone call from Mary. "Please Ron im sorry, everyone is sick, help me!" that was all she could utter before the line went dead. Ron rushed to Marys house to see a sick man there pounding on the door, Ron grabbed a shovel from the garden and used it to kill the attacked. Mary busted out, her eyes droopy from crying and rushed into Ron's arms. They got into the car and headed towards the hospital, not knowing they'd never make it there.

Chapter 6

As they drove towards the hospital, they discussed what was going on. all they could figure out was that these people were sick, almost like zombies. They just sat, in silence they reached a roadblock. Not a roadblock of cars, or wood, but zombies. there were too many to drive through, so Ron turned off onto a dirt path, speeding to make some room between them and the monsters, until they hit a tree stump. The car flipped and rolled but landed upright and Ron and Mary ran, planning to follow that dirt road forever.

After about two hours of running, they saw lights in the ever growing darkness. At first they thought it was a city, but it was a camp. It reminded them of the movie "Day of the Dead". A guard screamed at them, and another checked to make sure they were human. They brought them in and gave them food and shelter. They were comfortable, socializing with the people as if nothing was wrong. Their waiter Mary and her husband Toby noticed they look of astonishment, and pulled them aside. She explained how the people here were trying to believe that nothing was wrong, because they couldn't handle what was happening, but no one know what was going on or how to stop it. After awhile, the master of the camp came to see them. He asked them their names, and after they told him all he could utter was, "And so the prophecy has been revealed, so shall the Shepard rise". And then he ran out of the room.

Part 4: The Shepard

Chapter 7:

Ron and Mary were puzzled by what just happened. A man they never met before just told them they they were some kind of saviors, and that they were somehow the key to stopping the monsters. They wandered around the settlement, looking for the man who had just confronted them. Suddenly a siren sounded and men carrying guns came running. Gunfire erupted from all sides, the monsters had showed up near the camp. The gunfire lasted for almost twenty minutes. Then the camp was normal, as if nothing had happened. Thats when their exhaustion caught up with them and they found a place to sleep for the night.

They tried to sleep, but every couple of hours the sirens went off again. By daybreak, they were fed up. They left their shelter and went outside. They were immediately rushed by townspeople, all screaming at them. Confused and scared, Ron tried to protect her, but the mob overcame him. A man came out with a gun, and pointed it at them. "You are the reason they are here." He yelled, and then he shot. This man had poor aim, when he shot he hit Mary in the arm. She fell to the ground and began to cry. Another gunshot, this time from their leader. The mod dispersed, and Ron went to help Mary. But she got up and began running, Ron tried to chase her but they held him back. And just like that she was gone.

Chapter 8

Ron was infuriated. The love of his life was gone, and there was nothing he could do. He tried to remain hopeful, she was smart and she could handle it on her own. The village leader too him to his makeshift house, and sat him down. "Why are you doing this! Let me go!" Ron screamed. But the leader just shook his head. " Calm down young one, I have a reason for keeping you here. My name is Hartford and I need your help. You see, you are a prophet, when this all began, i found your name in the mud here, and i know you can help stop those monsters." "But what about Mary, isn't she important too? And what about the prophet of yours?" Ron asked, clearly intrigued. "I lied about Mary, she was never really important, but I wanted to make sure you stayed. And for the prophet, well, that has yet to be revealed to us. But now we must most stop these hideous creatures. I dont know how they were created, but their source seems to be that school you used to attend. IT if up to you to find where in the school it is you must leave now, take this handgun, its all we can spare." Hartford said. Ron left to be greeted by too servicemen. They got him a car and sent him away.

Part 5: Saving Graces:

Chapter 9:

The drive to the school was eerily quiet. He saw monsters, but they were easily avoided. He got close to the school, and saw amount of monsters. Suddenly his cell phone rang. It was Mary. "Ron, Ron are you ok? I'm so sorry!" She said. "Yes I'm fine, where are you?" he said. "I found shelter, its safe here. I'm at the abandoned factory." "Ok, wait there, i will come get you." he instructed. "No, im coming to help you, theres five of us and we have weapons, where are you?" "At the school, come quickly" he then hung up and contemplated his next move. He checked his gun, only 1 clip with 11 bullets, he couldn't shoot them. His only move was to run them down, and make a break for the school. He revved the car and drove right into the crowd. When he got close enough he bailed. The car hit the wall with the monsters still chasing it. He ran into the school and locked the door.

He heard the monsters banging on the door, but he kept moving. He ran past the monsters straight for the swim area. He looked into the pool area, it was clear. He ran straight for the door, but he could tell it was too hot to touch before he got to it. Suddenly behind him he heard a hiss. There was a monster the one place he didn't look, on the roof. It was like the other, but it had webbed feet. Ron was terrified at the thought that the monsters were evolving already. It jumped at him but he ducked. It hit the door and bounced back, unaffected by the searing heat. He shot it dead in three shots. He put hit foot on its hand and shot its wrist until he could pull it off. He removed the bones and used to like a glove to open the door, into the unknown.

Final Chapter:

Inside the room it was cool. It was a tiled room with a machine in the middle, that looked like a furnace. He shot it and it stopped. Suddenly the floors tilted back and the walls melted around him, he fell into the blackness. He landed softly in a large cavern with rocks all over. In the back was a machine, but it had a living heart. On the sides were six lights. He went up and shot the living heart. The room began to shake, and he fell to the ground. The heart split open, and inside was an underdeveloped bat. It was a monster, but it looked like it was still a baby. Suddenly Ron fainted.

Hours had passed since Ron left camp. Monster attack increased so significantly that they couldn't hold the monsters back. They realized the horrible truth, knowledge was what was attracting the monsters to the camp. Townsfolk were fleeing the camp and becoming monsters themselves. As the monsters got into the town, the waiters Mary and Toby hid in the wine cellar. They were safe, but at the same time, they were horrified beyond belief. They just wanted to die. They looked around the cellar for a good weapon, but instead they found a tape player. They hit play and "Amazing Grace" began to play. They listened for awhile, until it was interuppted, and they got a message they never expected.

Ron woke up in the swim area. He got up and looked alround. Everything was calm. He looked around the school and there were no monsters. He went outside, it was calm and cool out. He sat on the curb and waited for Mary. Finally he saw her running towards the school, crying. They ran to each other and embraced. Mary sunk her teeth into his arm. He pulled away stunned, what he saw wasn't the Mary he know, but a monster. He grabbed his gun and looked into her eyes "Death must be better than the horror you face" and he shot her. He then pointed the gun at his head, and he pulled the trigger.
