WRITE FOR THE TIMES - SUBMIT A GUEST ARTICLE:

Remember, YOU can write an article for the Tip.It Times! You can apply to write full time, or just submit a "one-off" guest article any time you want! Our editors will work with you to ensure that your article is ready for publication. All guest articles can be submitted to @tripsis or any other Editorial Panel member. For more information, including details on how to apply full time, read this forum thread: http://forum.tip.it/topic/209138-how-to-write-for-the-tipit-times/

I'd like to remind people of the rules pertaining to Times threads:

[hide=Read these rules before posting in this thread]

Rampant flame wars have taken control of virtually every week's times discussion topics. The following guidelines must be followed when posting on this topic. Posts that ignore these guidelines will be removed.

1. You are invited and welcome to express like or dislike on articles and a particular author's writing style. It is not acceptable, however, to flame or personally insult an author. Posts that aren't anything but an attack will be removed from the topic.

2. Spelling and grammar errors can be reported to tripsis by PMing her and they will be fixed promptly. It is not necessary to post them on the discussion topic.

3. Off topic posts that do not discuss the content of that week's articles will be removed. This is not the place to discuss the direction of the times, how much you love or hate the times, etc. Off topic posts will be removed.

By keeping within these guidelines, Times discussion topics will mean more for the Panel and Administration than just a place for flame wars. Flame wars do not provide any useful feedback to the Times, which is mainly what we're aiming for with these topics: feedback.

This policy is effective as of now, November 17, 2010. Any posts prior to the creation of this policy may or may not be removed according to the new guidelines.

[/hide]

When replying please make sure to clarify the article you are replying to! Thanks!

If you spot any typos or mistakes in an article then please PM them to @tripsis. :)

Enjoy the articles!

... I find these to be somewhat crappy articles.

I kinda doubt they would crack down on name trading. I doubt Jagex would care. I know I wouldn't.

The world expanding thing does kind of have a point, but it would have been better if it was more in-depth.

No offense.

If you feel that you could do a better job, you should consider submitting a guest article.

Personally, I liked the one about name trading. I never knew that it existed, so it was something new and fresh.

I wouldn't either, but it doesn't mean that there shouldn't be some awareness on the issue. I personally don't give a rat's ass about how endangered some long-nosed shrew is somewhere in the states, but it's nice to see that people care about even the small things. Same can be said about the display name black market.

Yes name trading is against the rules but if you have the money (Gp not real money) and the trader is willing then why not?

I'd live to have a certain name but since I started playing in '06 it's been unavailable the entire time.

Is it wrong if I want to have it and he's willing to trade? I run the risk of losing my money but that's the risk you take.

As for the expansion I was really excited about the eastern lands and was pretty disappointed when it came to be.

Now with the addition of the Kalphite King they're just adding sprinkles to a melting ice cream cone.

Just it being against the rules should be enough of a reason not to. And if you lose money to a name seller it just encourages them to continue dealing with names.

Skepticism and negativity won't really get us anywhere either. At least now more people are aware of the issue.

Sometimes you need to look something as part of the entire picture, like looking at a whole mosiac rather than focusing on one or two tiles. For example, the long-nosed shrew might be prey for a species of moles that help to fertilize the soil. Without shrews, the moles die off or move somewhere else, and agriculture declines, putting stress on farmers' income and increasing food prices.

IF it were not against Jagex's rules and IF there were a secure way to complete the transaction, perhaps there would be fewer objections, and I did briefly mention this possibility near the end of the article. But keep in mind that for now, that's diving deep into the hypothetical.

There is also the issue that, as another post mentioned, if you are scammed you're feeding the scammers. It's sort of like giving 10k to a 'doubler' to see if on the off chance they will do it-but you're likely giving them exactly what they want instead.

"Fight for what you believe in, and believe in what you're fighting for." Can games be art?

Thanks for the encouragement. People don't often respond to fictionals, so it's especially nice when they do. :)

I liked the ficitional article as well. It was quite refreshing to read the perspective of the Entrana priest, as it's rather a stark contrast to Jagex's "take the piss" mocking attitude they seem to have towards organized religion generally, but more especially Anglican history (I suspect they draw on such for the Church of Saradomin).

As a writer-- I do understand good fiction draws on elements audiences are familiar with, but I am pleased when writing is more nuanced and avoids the same tired old clichés and stereotypes.

Re: Pushing the Boundaries: An interesting follow-up to ¨HAPPY NEW… game?" And an interesting point about the lodestones, too. I wouldn't be surprised if many players gloss over the details. It's quite a far cry from when spell teleports could fail, back in RS1, and I seem to remember players walking (running wasn't there yet) from city to city. It also reminds me of the idea of the Australian walkabout approach to playing the game-- I think it was mentioned in a Times article or on the forums here-- I can't remember for sure.

I still hold out hope that PoP is not all that Jagex has in mind for the Eastern Lands. I still dream that they might make a connection from Port Phasmatys, perhaps by way of Ak-Haranu (the bolt rack seller) and the ship with the broken ectofunctus. But I also hold on to the crazy hope that Jagex will give us more uses for ectotokens, too.

I was hoping some solutions might be offered (this is my tired old "think like a developer" line). I'll leave it at that; it would have rounded out the piece very well. Runescape does have a few less-developed areas-- I don't see many players seeking out solitude JUST yet. If I remember right, Jagex wants to work more on the existing world, and if they're sticking to this, solutions will lie on what they should work over next... and make more relevant, and not just crowded.
