  1. Provided that the rest of this topic is more sensible than deathdrow's original post (and subsequent posts) I think we can keep this open. It can be an interesting topic. Be cool.

  2. I don't see this working. It's all right to group things like the 'Today...' thread together, because people aren't actually discussing anything there. They post about their day and generally it's left at that (with exceptions of course). Things are just going to get muddled together and lost in a current affairs thread.

  3. Yeah I always carry chewing gum too. Between smoking and drinking coffee my breath would be pretty bad without a mint injection every now and then. My tongue has tasted terrible lately.

  4. I don't think it's selfish to excercise one of the very few choices you're offered in life. At this stage I certainly don't want children - Not only am I too irresponsible, but I haven't yet found anything that is worth living for. Doesn't seem fair to bring a kid into the world which you don't enjoy being a part of (on the whole).

  5. Well my silly fear is looking at tall buildings. I can go past one in a car and feel the hairs on the back of my neck rise, my palms start to sweat and I feel an intense tingling in my lower back. I have no problem when I'm IN a tall building, up a ladder or anything height related. It's almost a phobia

I have a friend who suffers from something like this. He says it feels like he's going to 'fall upward', off the earth and towards the sky. We take great delight in pointing out tall buildings to him.

  6. Just finished watching Charade, with Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant. It was pretty entertaining and I don't know why I expected more, but I did. I love little Audrey, but her films are never as engrossing as I like films to be. Just pretty little distractions. The prettiest there ever was.

  7. All I want to do (or feel able to do) is write, so I just need to continue down the path I'm on just now - Working terrible jobs that won't tie me down and will allow me the time I need to think and write. Maybe some long way down the line I wouldn't mind being a university lecturer. We'll see how it goes.

  8. I wonder about the age bracket of the gay people who want to get married. It really seems to me that it's a dying institution that doesn't really figure in to the minds of the young. As a young straight man I don't think I have any friends who are particularly concerned with or even like the idea of getting married, and I've got to assume that this idea is even more prevalent in the gay community. Of course it's easy to say that everyone thinks this way when they're young, but I think statistics would be on my side. I can't help but feel as if they're fighting for a right that's going to be undesirable in the not too distant future.

Of course I still think they should be able to marry if they want to, I just wonder why people would want to.

  9. There's nothing quite like having a girl who believes in you. It's a massive driving force, and one I've been without for a little while too long. I think there's a lot of truth to the idea that there's a great woman behind every great man.

On a physical level I'm all about stomach and legs.

  10. Maybe somebody can recommend me some things? I really like big and chaotic stuff.

Rossini should fit the bill quite well. You'll recognise his William Tell Overture which is quite something if you play it loud. La Gazza Ladra is another one you could check out by him. Gustav Mahler's symphonies are also worth a look.

I think the best way to get into classical music is to tune in to a classical radio station. If you don't know of one near you they're easy to find on the web. The big British classical station is ClassicFM, which you can listen to online.

  11. It has to be all or nothing. Once you draw a line you have to start deciding what is and what is not acceptable and the line just gets pushed further and further back. So long as what's reported is true then it should be allowed.

I understand that. However, it's still pretty damn disgraceful whenever the media takes advantage of their freedoms and tries to gather ratings at any cost, even if it hurts a person's career. This man may have made a mistake, but it doesn't warrant the publicity that he's currently receiving over the issue...

As far as politicians go, private details should not be divulged during a campaign in order to ruin the other candidate's political career, unless it is pertinent. (i.e. The person is currently actively engaging in illegal activities, or they advocate a certain political philosophy) Pertinent information reveals a politician's character, which is a very important factor that potential voters deserve to know before voting for a certain individual. However, if something is impertinent, it should be kept confidential. You may feel that a politician made a mistake because he did drugs, but as long as it was in the past and isn't something that hasn't happened recently, then it is irrelevant and has no bearing on the person's ability to lead.

I'm no fan of the current state of the media either, but if that is the price of freedom of speech then we have to pay it and be thankful that we're getting such a bargain.
