  1. Ok. So power can not harm the computer.. its just a waste of energy. Now, you went on newegg.com, so it was American priced, i went to .ca, and it was 20$ more. I hate to be a money-saver here, but i went out looking for cheaper ones. I found 4 extra ones, on top of the one you showed me, which i might still get anyways. http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6817153028 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6817182159 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6817226002 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6817341012 Me, personally, i like the SIGMA black and blue one. Decent price, and it has a lot of "tech-y" features like fins that protrude to dissipate heat. And i might still get yours, but out of the 4 here, are any of them as good or better than yours? I've decided to leave the video cards till the very last post this thread will have, because i have a feeling it will take longer to decide Starting on the next section : Memory Now i found this one: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6820145184 4gb, the other information i cant understand -.- and it had a whopping 741 reviews, and they were for 5/5. What do you think?
  2. The HD48XX series was designed to cope with the hot temperatures the cards produce so as long as you have decent airflow in your case, you shouldn't have a problem. My card runs just fine and I've only had it for a month so I can't really comment on the reliability or durability of the card. Sorry if you've already stated this, but what size monitor are you using? 22" or lower a HD4850 512Mb will do you fine. Once you get to 24" and above you might want to get a HD4870 or higher. Anyways, I agree with what Joe said and Powercolor are an excellent brand. Also, keep in mind the release of AMD's new CPU's - they look very promising. PSU looks good, will run everything fine. If you're looking for some headroom consider something like an Antec NeoPower 550W (Modular) or even a 520HX (Modular) They are both built by Seasonic so they are of excellent quality. Case is excellent as well. Good airflow and cooling, nice choice. I'd personally go with a Western Digital hard drive but that's up to you. RAM is good, Corsair are a good brand. I prefer Pioneer optical drives - they've always been good to me. Could consider an Asus board but that is an excellent Motherboard. I am a Gigabyte man myself but I'm just trying to keep your options open. And to answer your latest question, I can't really say. All of them are good, reliable brands. *whistles* Wow.. i was watching your name at the bottom of the "who's browsing this forum" section, and by how long your name was there.. i knew you were going to type something informative. I was right  So.. let me think of all this stuff. Screen size:22" Cooling fans in the CASE alone : 3 = well ventillated Temperature: not a problem Card to get: 4850 Card company: 1 vote by you on Powercolor Power Supply: I like the 520HX Remaining questions: Is it possible to have a power supply that's too strong for the CPU?
  3. Ok, il do some more research into the Catalyst thing just for future reference. how hot should a card be under load? and.. what is considered load? And one more thing, which, out of the 5 cards i listed, would you say is best?
  4. It doesn't really matter which one you get. I personally have an Asus one which has excellent cooling (if you've seen it, it has a massive fan). Personally I'd get one with 512MB of memory as apposed to the 1GB version because there really isn't much difference. Basically the card differences are that they're overclocked (Higher clock speed), different cooling methods (Dual slot cooling, different fans, etc.) and that's really it. Read the reviews, look at the prices, and just choose one you like. I think this one's yours  http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6814121272 Here's the ones I've been looking at: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6814131125 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6814102760 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6814127370 http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6814129112 And Jason's one as well. Which would you guys recommend? Now those are all 512mb.. but in some comments, i noticed them saying something about 4870, and it being much better than the 4850, is this true? EDIT-- I searched the 4970 one.. and the price jumped up as far as $400. So that's out of the question. Also.. i notice people saying some cards can get quite.. toasty. in excess of 80c is this potentially dangerous to the card? What COULD happen if it overheated? Because the last thing i want to do is spend $200, and have it melt away.. *Quite litterally  * Jason- how would you rate your card? is it hot? Has it lasted long?
  5. Ok.. just one last detail, which companies are, "very generally speaking" good graphic card companies? EDIT: Oh.. one problem.. i went to newegg, and searched that name.. and i got about 20 different card, from different companies, with different features.. but they were all the Ati 4850 thing.. which to get?
  6. Ok.. this is the risky part, cause it's again, the part i want the most for my comp. Could you give me the Name, and the other info for That card, that we were just talking about? It will be on the front page, 1st post. Btw, what do you think of the case?
  7. Ok.. Well I'm not even a person who would play Crysis, i was just using it as a stand-point. Would the 4850 be able to play, with good graphics: Spore Halo WoW EVE-Online NOTE: Ok.. i was trying to do SOMETHING myself, and i found this case http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6811208020 Its Wicked looking, got tons of drive slots, both internal, and external, 3 fans, and lots of space for the wires and the motherboard. Is it good enough to buy? It's also really cheap, which i need.
  8. AHA! THAT's what I was wondering about, the original person who told me to get the Nvida GEforce 9800 said it it could max out the graphics on Crysis Warhead. Is this true? By the way, on the first post on the main page, Ive listed, and will continually list the pieces that i KNOW im getting, based on your opinions, and one by one, I'll have a list of what im gonna get!
  9. Hm. SO I should go with a quad, and number's aren't everything.. I'm following that much, and you recommend the -insert name here- 4850, over the 9800?
  10. Quad cores are more of a future-proofing thing, but with new OS's, and multi-threaded games, they far outperform the price. You can run multiple programs on different processors, which helps a lot. And it's fun to brag about : So.. basically.. in the Layman sort of way.. Quad < Dual
  11. Yeah, I was meaning to start that later on in the thread, but what's the difference between dual, and quad? I used to hear many disadvantages about quad, so I was a bit sketchy about getting it. What exactly does it do, that Dual doesn't? And to old joe, those look like decent buys, but is the graphics card better than the 9800? I don't know much about computer stuff.. but aren't bigger numbers supposed to be better than smaller ones of the same type? As in i would expect 9800 to be better than 9600; or is that just an assumption?
  12. Oh.. I thought I stated it twice.. anyways, a bit under 900$ CAN would be nice. Actually.. it has to be, lol.
  13. Hm. Looks like this is going to become a larger thread.. but oh well. I AM starting to become interested in this "Do-it-yourself" aspect. But i still need more info. There was another thread I saw, and the guy bought VERY good pieces, and put them together for almost 1000$. Unfortunately, i only have about 900, so some of my pieces could be downgraded. Nadril, on that other thread, said to go to the site http://www.Newegg.ca (That's the site I would like to use. Also, it has to be .ca, so i get Canadian prices.) So.. here's my results. Cases: I picked two. XION case. Customer Rating: 4/5 Price: 80$ http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6811208020 RAIDMAX case. Customer Rating: 5/5 Price 110$ http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6811156063 Graphic Cards: This is the main thing I want for my new comp, as I just love good graphics. Last time I heard, Nvida GEforce 9800 was a top end one? Am I right? Motherboards: Didn't know where to go with that... Power Supply: Didn't know where to go with that either. Processor: Has to be Intel, Looking for around 2.6GHz and higher. Price may vary, as long as the total price of the comp is again, under 900$. Fans: ...No idea. Hard drives: 250gb-500gb. i only really NEED 250-500, and it will also keep the price lower. Memory: No idea.. but I would like around 3-4GBs As you can see.. I'm quite pathetic with computer stuff.. as I was only able to pick out the Cases  I would Really love some help here, and hopefully I will get some, cause tip.it is an awesome site :D
  14. I guess i should of mentioned.. but im looking for a desktop, not a laptop, and also, its VERY well ventilated where it will be.
  15. Why not Dell? Have any Bad past experiences with them? And thansk for the OS bit.
  16. Scroll down this page to get to the main article, about http://www.Newegg.ca and my computer. Pieces I've decided on: Total Cost: $856.72 Processor type: Quad Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600. -$229.99 Graphic card: PowerColor 4850. -$177.29 Case: NZXT Guardian. -$109.79 Motherboard: MSI P43 Intel motherboard. -$110.49 Hard Disk: Western Digital Caviar SE. 79.49 Optical drive: Samsung DVD and CD Burner & Reader. -$30.49 Power Supply: OCZ Stealth. -$73.59 Memory: Kingston 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240 pin memory. -$45.99
  17. The hell? The PC I posted is a ton better and cheaper. Yeah, sorry Sirfred, but i cant afford 999. And Nadril's comp is awesome.
  18. Ok, I'll look into that.
  19. You do know Windows XP won't be supported by Microsoft in 2009, correct? It's just something to consider. OH snap.. forgot that.. guess that's another 100$ down the drain for the vista :?
  20. Whoa Skate.. thanks for the effort, lol Just to clear things up.. i don't even play Crysis, nor do i expect to.. I actually hate viloten games, as well as FPS games, i was just asking if it could play it, to get a good sense of the computers capabilities. I've set my mind on this computer.. as it's pretty much the only thing i can afford. and even that il have to work extra just to get the cash for it... and I'm fine with outdated technology... this computer I'm typing this on is from like 2003.. and it can play most of TODAY's games fairly well.... Well thanks Nadril and Skate.. i think ill go with that one.. unless someone comes otu with a supercomputer for 50 bucks, ;) .
  21. Argh.. you almost got me sold dude.. but is it still a normal computer? I need to know if there's all the normal applications. Microsoft word ans stuff.. and BTW< is it XP or Vista?
  22. Crysis warhead is currently one of the most demanding games out there on the market, it brings most computers to their knees. (The PC's that laura posted wouldn't even be able to run it). As far as a hard drive goes man, Just spend $100 on a 1TB drive and put it in yourself. WHOA. SO then then the comp that can play it with ease it a great gaming comp then? But then why was it so cheap? Is it crappy for everything else?
  23. Hey Nadril, that's a good computer.. but the low hard drive space kinda put me off... Is there any way i could up that? PS. How hard is that game for a normal computer anyways? lol
  24. Whoa Laura, Thanks for all the effort. Those are some nice computers, but I'm looking for something.. better. I'm hoping to not have to buy a new computer after this until I'm done .. like university. I put up a budget there.. so i can spend another 200-300$ from the ones you suggested. But thanks though, i really appreciate it guys!
