Ofcourse you need to complete the quest to get the shield as a drop, can't kill the beast without the quest, now can you? you can buy the shields, or at least they are listed in the GE. so maybe thats what he meant.

They're not stackable, you need to fish them yourself, and they have to be used on the karambwan vessel for each catch. And there's a chance the karambwan will steal your bait and escape. It's a lot like hunting grenwalls in many respects. I'd say it's the most difficult fish to catch. you can eat first half of pizza without delay so you can eat 28 pizza slices witohut delay
