i've checked out the device manager, its not in there. im guessing the gfx card is bad. =\ that sucks. 100 dollars down the drain. EDIT: would the fan on the gfx card still spin if it were dead?

my bios is weird. when i went to bios, i went into the intergrated w/e stuff. i found nothing that has to do with pci-e =[. i triple checked every possible thing.

thats what i was thinking...is there any way i can get the computer to recognize that i added the gfx card into the pci-e slot? i tryed the thing in the control panel "add hardware" but nothing turned up =[

I've never had to disable onboard video to get a PCI card to work, but I usually do have to tell windows to use it: There is something you could try, after installing the pci card plug the monitor into the onboard video, not the pci. Then right click on the desktop, click properties, go to the last tab. See if your pci video card is in the drop down menu, or click on the grayed out monitor. Once you have it selected check both boxes "extend desktop to this monitor" "make this primary monitor". If a dialogue box comes up with 15 second countdown click OK (or don't click anything if for some reason you can't see the screen anymore, that means you accidentally turned off your onboard GPU). Once that is done, check to see which side of the screen your desktop extended to (your mouse will go off completely, and take longer to get back). Drag the properties window over to that side so it is on the desktop you can't see. Unplug the monitor from the onboard video and plug it into your PCI card. You should see your desktop with the properties window. Then in the properties window select your onboard from the drop down or clicking on the monitor icon, and deselect "extend desktop to this monitor". Done  . Oh and some of that may be wrong, don't have an XP computer on to check so I am doing it from memory. Let me know if anything is unclear. my computer is kinda odd. the last tab in the properties thing is settings, and the only drop down thing is for the color quality =\ EDIT: idk if i said this b4..but my gfx card gets power to it, but puts out no video =[.

so do u think its the gfx card? or maybe i did something wrong, like..didnt disable the onboard gfx card right? and..i went into bios to disable the onboard gfx card, but i didnt find it there, so i had to do it a diff way. but yeahh...i dont like my computer. and i really cant wait to build my new one.

It doesn't. http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_9400gt_us.html And wow. I'm stunned, i was wrong about the 9400gt. 50w! Holy crap, it's as much as my 4670. The 8600gt i have in another computer uses about 40w... And both of them are a crapload more powerfull than the 9400gt. I don't really know how Nvidias technicians have designed and engineered this. I assumed about 25w since that's the area where those types of cards float around in. But still, i run the 8600gt on a 250w psu (albeit from 07 and only a single core celeron aswell). So i don't know what's up with that card. @Emers: Do you have the possibility of testing it in another computer? The 2 prong cord, if i've checked correctly, is what i have to power my dvd player. But you might mean another type of cord? I'm not sure. no, i dont. =[. im thinking the card is dead. but would it still get power if it were dead? EDIT: its more of a connector, its got a 2 prong inserting thing (i think its called the "female" end of it). and its thin. i googled it, and i think its for audio. It's alive lol. No but just because you ain't getting any picture doesn't mean the whole thing has died on you. Return it to the shop if it still has warranty on it (if the shop refuses and you still have warranty you can contact the manufacturer instead). i dont have a warrenty on it, they asked and i said no =[.

uhm, the only thing that came with the 9400gt is a 2 prong cord, i have no clue what its for

9400gt uses something like 25w on full load. So changing the psu just for that graphics card wouldn't be necessary. The pci-e slot on the motherboard provides 75w, anything above that you'll need molex or pci-e cables from the psu to the graphics card. ok so power isnt the reason why its not working..maybe its cuz my computer (all stock cept the mouse, keyboard, monitor, and gfx card) is from 2000-2002(not sure which year)

uhh i do have a 2 prong plug in, is that maybe what i need to connect? and uhm..the card gets power, the fan spins, so i wasnt sure if the wire was for power. i heard that the wire was too small to be a power cord.

that case is tight, and i mean like...i saw a computer on bestbuy's website for 620$ and it had 8gb ddr3 sdram. it was a gameing computer. idk if i should just buy the computer already built, or build my own. Depends, does it come with a good GPU, good sized HDD etc? wutwut. idk xD im not good with computers. im not gonna be putting teh computer together by myself also. ima have my friend from work help. Your better off building a computer then I doubt the one instore has a good gpu etc if gpu = graphic card, then the graphic card in the computer that i was thinking of buying is a ATI Radeon HD 4350. do u know if thats better than a pny geforce 9400gt made by nvidia? o.O Both cards are terrible. http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/best-gaming-graphics-card,review-31807-7.html Anything under a 4670 or 9600GT isn't worth buying trust me you'd regret it. haha yeah, my friend just told me that on facebook. xD it'll be a few months before i get a GeForce GTX 280 like him. but thats what im gonna be putting in my puter. also, i found a diff cpu, its more expensive, but my friend told me that intel works better with nvidia gfx cards, and amd works better with ATI. idk if this is true, but i found a pretty nice cpu that he recomended me for only 20 dollars more. heres the link. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4621250&Sku=I69-8400 Not true. And that Intel cpu is worse and older than Joedastudd's listed. umm...after looking at the prices of the gtx series...is it really worth getting one that good just for playing crossfire and counter strike:source, and a few other games that arnt too hard on graphics? cuz for a gtx285 it was like 400$. i was like  EDIT: ok, the graphic card i have in my computer right now is a nvidia 6100. its stock. i have my nvidia 9400gt in the pci-e socket (yes, the card is made for pci-e) and its getting power, but puts out no video. i tried disableing the onboard video card, and installing the drivers for the new one, but no luck. anybody know how to get that to work? D:
