  1. Feel free to add me Lego.\ ------------------------------- One of these days, I'll play long enough to level something again. My power supply got fried, but I have the pc back up and running...maybe tomorrow will be a level day. Miscellania Seed Nest Count: 3 total including... - 1 Magic, Willow & Acorn Oh, and a green egg. Hmm...now where is that ham? :-k
  2. Phew. Problem solved. After celebrating Father's Day , I had a chance to run out and pick up a power supply. I got a 500 WATT Antec Smartpower 2.0. It is SWEET!!! It has modular cables, so I don't have to clutter up the case with extraneous wires, and the wire-clusters are wrapped. Yes, I'm a geek...getting all excited about my power supply cords. Anywho, my system whirred, booted and is running just fine. Thanks for posting.
  3. Yeah, my case is a $30 "cheap & dirty" Powmax I got when I built out this machine. I was thrilled that it came with a power supply at all. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that nothing else is injured. I'm really not in the mood to spend more coin on it right now.
  4. I plugged the dead power supply into the Dell MB. All it did was whistle - no fans kicked in. I tried the Dell power on the AMD...all it did was whistle too, but it lacks the additional 12V(4 Pin) plug that the AMD MB needs.
  5. From what you posted, I gather that you are trying to record to a DVD on your system but it appears that you are doing so using a CD (not DVD) burner. I have a similar model that plays DVDs and Reads/Writes/Rewrites CDs, but does not write to DVD.
  6. Cool, thanks. I'm figuring that this one was sub- to average quality since it came with the case and isn't branded. Is StarTech a decent brand? It looks like my local Comp Usa (I normally shop Tigerdirect.com, but I can't wait that long) might carry it. I just hope I can get out to get one before hubby has to use his laptop. I might even have to connect this thing to my monitor in the mean time ------------- EDIT: I have a 200 watt power supply from a Dell Dimension XPS system. Is it safe to use this power supply to test anything in my AMD (that was connected to the ATX power supply) or is it even compatible?.
  7. It looks like I get to troubleshoot my computer now. I powered it up this AM, came back to it after family-pool time and it was not only off...but unresponsive. Hmm, so that's what that burnt smell is coming from. I open up the case to see what happens when I attempt to power up. The CPU fan twitches...then nothing. Ok, so I pull out the power supply and it does reek of electronic toast. I don't have a Power Supply tester, but I'm fairly certain that it's hosed. Hopefully, there was no domino effect. I don't see any char marks anywhere else on the board. The CPU fan does have some smell, but it could just be proximity. GAAAAGHHH. The next chance I have to get out sans kids, I plan to buy a new power supply to see if that solves it. In the mean time, I'll just freak out over the idea that I might have to replace any number of parts. I haven't had this particular issue before so anyone who has experienced this, please feel free to post any advice.
  8. Posting the "NFS" (not for sale) is a method of preventing anyone from taking the image and posting it elsewhere (as stats for a RS character for sale) in violation of the official RuneScape rules. ------------------------------------------- Still no levels. Miscellania Seed Nest Count: 7 total including... - 3 Acorn - 1 Banana, Orange, Willow & Yew
  9. It's my understanding that unless your IP address is static, and tied to a domain with specific information about your location, that your residential street address is not something people can find out by IP address alone. If someone uses an IP rout tracer, they can narrow down your regional location to the City/State you live in based on the servers that exist between you and their IP. Still, not your residential address.
  10. After you finish Throne of Miscellania, you can pay the locals to do a combination of mining, woodcutting (maples), herb/flax gathering, and fishing. Nest drops tag along maple cutting...as they would if you cut them. Once you finish Royal Trouble, you can add Mahogony & Teak woodcutting along with farming seed gathering to the mix. I didn't start to manage my kingdom until after Royal Trouble...and Construction launch.
  11. Gaggghhhhh. You are a MACHINE!!! OMGosh...I guess I should play more. It's been three days since my last level.
  12. Be careful how you hold the nail, don't hammer your thumb. See, I told you that you'd leave me in the dust once you started Construction. Congrats on the levels!!!
  13. I'm sorry to hear that about that guy's bad experience. I'd imagine there are horror stories with just about any manufacturer though. There is always risk. My experience was great with them when I had a packaged PC. As for e-Bay...I'd be comfortable buying parts there, but not so much when wanted a pre-configured system. In most cases, going with the manufacturer provides added service and warranty benefits that going through a third-party might not. Now that I'm comfortable assembling the parts, e-Bay isn't out of the question.
  14. Physical Memory is your RAM. Virtual Memory is how your computer lightens the burden on your physical memory by looking for areas of RAM that have not been used recently and copying them onto your hard disk. This frees up space in RAM. Windows handles this process.
  15. For now, I'd say ... upgrade the graphics card and the RAM, then see what happens. If you need to upgrade other things, you still can...and you'll still have a great video card. All the other stuff might be needed, but you can start with the basics and see if you get the performance you want...for now. Keep in mind that a lot of people have somc crazy powerful machines and they wouldn't settle for less. Coming from a machine that's limping along, you may very well be happy with stepping up just a bit to get it running.
  16. That memory dump could be caused by a number of things, one of them being bad RAM. To start, I'd recommend running the MS Windows Memory Diagnostic I'm going to dig a bit deeper and post anything I can find on Java-specific fixes related to that Access Violation.
  17. If you still have any documentation for your system, there should be specifications for RAM capacity. Otherwise you should be able to click on something like (this is Win2k path, XP might be different) click on Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Information. The system summary should list your System Manufacturer and Model. Win2k looks like this... Anyone who has XP, feel free to post the XP path/screenshot if it's way different. You should be able to look the details for your Manufacturer/Model up on their site...or post here for help. As for the type of RAM, I'd bet yours takes SDRAM. Even so...in lieu of looking at documentation, pull out the card you have in the slot, blow off the dust and look at the sticker on it. At the least, get a twin for the 256mb card & swap it with the 128mb you have.
  18. If you choose to switch to Sun Java, you'll need to adjust your Advanced Internet Settings to select "Use JRE 1.5.1_06 for " and unselect the "Java console enabled" Microsoft VM option. Also, you will need to scroll down on the "Select Detail" page and pick "Signed Applet Using SUN Java" every time you log in.
  19. Downstairs in the Yanille Agility Dungeon. You need 40 agility and antipoison. Find the poison spiders and search the crate next to the stairs.
  20. Dell is a good solid brand if you are looking for something pre-packaged. My first PC was a Dell and I was extremely happy with it. The Dell site is great in that you can key in your system tag and it will tell generate a list of the compatible upgrades they have available. I'd go there, to see what I could handle...then go find the most affordable. Over time, I upgraded what I could and then eventually farmed the new parts into a new build. Good luck!
  21. Check your Motherboard specs for RAM capacity. If you have two slots, I'd recommend getting twins (as opposed to the 128/256 combo you have now)...up to 1mb total should do it. This video card should do the trick (and it's <$100 with the rebate). GeForce 6800 Xtreme / 256MB GDDR3 / SLI / PCI Express / Dual DVI /HDTV / Video Card I'd start there to see how you perform. I used to run a highly graphics-intensive game (ran on OpenGL) with a wussier machine than yours, with just a new vid card. Don't be intimidated by the inside of your case...although the dust is pretty scary. Just make sure you are grounded and NOT using a magentic screwdriver. The memory and video cards are painless to swap out. Good luck!
  22. Yeah, Firefox is my default browser too. It's much better than MS Exploder...err Explorer.
  23. No levels again today. Miscellania Seed Nest Count: 5 total including... - 4 Acorn - 1 Apple----------------------- I checked out your rate thread Lego9661. Feel free to edit and put a link in your post here.
  24. I still have the disc from my ancient version. I just didn't install when I built this PC. Maybe I'll pull it out if The Gimp starts lacking. I am thoroughly impressed with GIMP...probably would even if it wasn't a freebie.
  25. Thanks Goldwolflord! I used to have and use photoshop back in my working days but Adobe really needs to make it less of a hog before I fork out the coinage for the latest version.
