  1. always thought the random LRC/dung/etc were the "smith" updates

LRC was mining and fishing, dg applies to all skills. Smithing hasn't seen any major improvement for a long time.

My thoughts on a possible smithing update revolve around how Jagex could get around the existing bronze to rune table. Since it takes 99 smithing to make a rune plate from scratch, it would be very awkward to explain the production of higher level armor at levels below that. So there's not much room for expansion at 99 short of expanding the level cap, which I don't think they'll do.

However, they've been able to get around this problem before by having our characters merely repair or reconstruct items. For example, you can combine a dragon sq, reassemble a dragon plate, and attach sigils and visages. In other words, our characters may be capped in their knowledge of primary smithing techniques, but could still be skilled enough in their secondary knowledge to perform many tasks. Perhaps we'll see the release of certain types of "shards" to be used in making new items.

  2. A. In short: yes, we think about improvements all the time, and some of them are even possible. One that is hard to do is to enable Summoning creatures to take untradeable items, because technically you are trading with them when you give them items.

Everything you talk about here is a huge project in itself. They are very high on the to-do list but there are other great things that we want to do as well such as clan support or the Smithing update. Both are being worked on, and after that we are planning to investigate the interface functionality that you are talking about ?

So is this a borderline confirmation that we are still getting a smithing update and it wasn't all those dungeoneering armors?

Nice catch. Dang it if only I had an extra 100M to train smithing <_<

I thought the smithing update had been confirmed for a while now. It's just that they've yet to to finish and/or release it.

Also, I've shot up from 84 to 97 smithing in the past week.

  3. It's always funny. People look at my combat level (138) and the gear I'm wearing and usually tell me, "Nerd. Get a life."

That's the point where I usually reply: "I've got a husband, three kids, a job, a house, a mortgage and a monthly car payment. How much more of a "life" do I really need?"

    :P

    I like this response.

  4. Lol...also have dyes for gravestones...or even to drink to change skin tone? I'd looooove to see a lv130 with neon orange skin....lol

Sounds like people in the Capitol (of Panem). Pretty soon you'll have full body tattoos and piercings offset with implants.

  5. Watch out....it's a trick :)

The more rares merchers have when free trade comes the more grip they got on prices of those rares.

People panicking now selling their rares.. people coming back to rs for free trade dumping their rares because they need gear/pots/food.

its a good reason to drop rares lower just so you can buy back more....its all timing.

Yah that's what happened with the easter crash i think.

I don't think that situation is directly comparable to what's happening now. Edibles were used as a stepping stop to phats and higher rares, but with the return of free trade you can skip that part and just pay cash if you wanted to. So now edibles don't have a use beyond being discontinued... you can't even display it since it just stays in your inv.

No, I meant the easter crash that happened several months back. Merchers who hoarded decided to dump some, lowering the price and causing mass panic. Then they swoop in and rebuy for a much lower price, similar to what freestyler was describing.

Ah. I still don't think it applies to this situation though. The GE was able to prop up a system which relied on people's beliefs and constricted trade to maintain value in these discontinued items. I don't believe anyone, even merchants, believe in their heart-of-hearts that phats and edibles are really worth their GE/street price.

  7. However, rares of any type have one powerful force at their back. It's pretty much accepted as canon that whatever happens, rares will always continue to go up, to the point where this belief helps fulfill its own prophecy to a large degree.

It's also a sound assumption, economically speaking. Rares are incapable of entering the game while being capable of leaving, be it through loss on death, alching/dropping, or quitting accounts. Meanwhile, more people continually enter the game, increasing the ratio of people who would like to have a rare versus number of rares.

I never said it wasn't. I'm just saying that the fact it's become so widely known and accepted has sped up the rise of rares even more.

ie. Whenever someone posts a question about any rare you always see the same response half a dozen times.

  8. I hesitate to put make a prediction on where the price will be in a month. I don't personally consider rares to be in the same behavior category as "useful" items like armor and resources. With lower rares it's a bit of a gamble in that although the items are discontinued, I think their prestige factor has also been damaged pretty badly in the crash. You also have to keep in mind that they have real no use beyond looking nice and holding wealth.

  9. In my opinion, some items are overvalued on the GE because of how it works. Lower rares are some of them. Speculation drove up prices, while your investment was protected by the limit on how much prices could fall on a per day basis. That's how santas and masks pushed over the 100m mark.

With free trade coming back you don't get to have that cushy price floor anymore. Demand is crashing and it's difficult to tell what the true price of these lower rares are since they've been inflated for so long. I'm think there's going to a be a decent-sized crash following the implementation of free trade. A partial recovery is possible, but nothing guaranteed.

That would make sense, but I think you underestimate just how much GP is in the game and how few rares there are. There really aren't as many lower rares in the market as people think. With the return of staking the amount of rares traded will go down even further because pures will grab hold of a good amount to stake and to wear since partyhats are way too expensive.

The current demand for lower rares is quite low, but only because the lower rares just crashed. They crashed because everybody paniced. People panic, people sell, the item goes down and down. However, with free trade I don't see rares ever going down. They never did before 2007: they always rose at a steady, slow pace.

I don't see how my assumption is any worse than yours. You assume that there will be enough wealthy additional accounts to absorb the rares that people bought expecting to profit, and are now dumping on the market.

Yes, it is partially panic but it's mainly the fact that these lower rares are overpriced. You had a positive feedback loop where the price rose, people predicted future price gains and tried to buy into the market, therefore causing the price to continue rising. The opposite is happening now. In addition, the rares market was never as calm as you make it out to be; yes, the general trend is upwards, however there was none of the steady pace. Lower rares were still affected by seasonal variations and other factors and could be quite volatile at times.
