  1. Why the [bleep] is everyone here an engineer. It's pissing me off.

    http://education-portal.com/articles/To ... ajors.html

    $$$

That's misleading data. Engineers tend to get some of the best starting salaries, but unlike others who go into business or medicine, their salaries don't increase all that much during their career if they do nothing but straight engineering. Take the average salaries of forty year olds in varying fields, and I'd betcha you won't see quite as many engineering majors in that list. You'll still see some of course, since engineering really is the toughest, but basing that list on pure starting salaries isn't completely the correct way of going about a rating.

  2. Medicine is a great field. It's salary, meaningfulness, and prestige are all but unmatched in the job market.

However, it is excruciatingly difficult to get into medical school. I went to a college that had 720 students in the "pre-medical" program, meaning all of these college freashmen wanted to get into medical school when they graduated.

8 people made it, 700+ had to find other jobs in the science field.

Don't forget that's it's a horrendously difficult and stressful lifestyle being a doctor, and that's only after you make it through twelve years of hell. And then your starting salary still sucks anyways.

If you want to be a doctor, know what hell you plan to get into. If there's an antonym for cake walk, it's premed and medicine.

  3. no Mage, I mean look at you post and count the number of times it says "[mean adjective] liberal". No one here is doing/saying that, and I don't really see what that has to do with healthcare. Chill out please, I don't want a R/D attackfest, I want to talk about healthcare unbiasedly (that's a word, right?)

and cmon dude. Fox is somewhat conservtive yes, but basically every other station is liberal. Beyond that, unlike other stations fox actually brings in people of opposing views and actually has debates. A lot of other stations are jut filled with democrats agreeing with each other (I'm not saying this as an attack, it's just my observation)

No Rocco, he's right. It's not so much that he wants to find someone to agree with as someone to back him up in debate. This forum might as well be a democratic convention. It's overwhelming, and admittedly a bit obnoxious.

I'm sure we're all sorry for not having the correct politcal beliefs.

I'd facepalm if that wasnt bad form. No one said being conservative was the correct belief. I just said it's hard sometimes to have a 10 v 1 debate. (sorry bout any confusion, I see how it'd sound attacking)

This is also why unfair debates are hard. The majority side often slanders the minority side, and I feel like the majority does it cause they can get away with it with numbers. If I were to say to you what you'd just said to me, you mineaswell just throw me to the hounddogs. I'd be a goner lol.

Sorry bout the double post, posting on mah phone

  4. You know what magekillr? It's posts like that that should explain to you why no selfrespecting person who disagrees with you ever wants to argue with you. You don't debate- like barihawk said, you attack people undeservingly and then hide behind intellectualism.

To call your entire copypasta post a strawman would be to give it to much argumentative justice. Its a piece of [cabbage]. Grow up mate.

  5. No Rocco, he's right. It's not so much that he wants to find someone to agree with as someone to back him up in debate. This forum might as well be a democratic convention. It's overwhelming, and admittedly a bit obnoxious.

I have a challenge for all the liberals though, and considering there's so many of you this should be easy. Everyone keeps posting data that we've all seen before, data that says America's system is broken. We get that, why don't you tell us the sun is hot too. My challenge is this: tell us WHY universal healthcare is needed, why it outweighs other options like the rescinding of company tax breaks or capping court compensations in the tote system. Why is eliminating private practice so necessary and beneficial?

  6. Robert and I_Hate_Libs (haha) may be going about this somewhat the wrong way, and they may seem like flame baiting to a degree, but the responses I'm seeing on this thread to them are abhorrent. You "lol'd"? Please, be less of a [bleep].

I agree with their line of thinking, that overtaxing the rich is not a reasonable idea, but I also agree they're taking it a bit far. To allow for proper government functioning, at least in this day and age, the rich do need to pay a little more than the poor percentage wise (and I mean the literal definition of 'a little'). Maybe if this country was as laissez-faire as it used to be that wouldn't be needed, but nowadays sharply cutting tax rates for the upper income brackets would have an extremely negative effect on the country, and the world. Gradual change would be great, but the conservative ideas thusfar mentioned? They're not exactly feasible.

To quantify, I'd say lower income brackets should pay something like 10% and upper around 20%. Nowadays, as opposed to a few decades ago, taxes seem too heavy on the rich (totalling a taking of over half their incomes), and that should be changed. At the very least taxes shouldn't be increased on the rich, but Obama plans to do that. Why did we vote this guy in. Socialist. Aye.

  7. I pay less tax than you and i get free, quick and high quality healthcare and unemployment/old age welfare. As a result I appreciate the system and I would never abuse it. My income tax does not pay for bombs, unemployment is lower and crime is less than in your country. How can you argue that your countries interpretation of social justice is further developed?

I'll bullet point my response to this 'cause I don't like getting into extended essays on this forum nowadays.

    1) Yes, the American system is broken and needs fixing. No, UHC is not the right fix.

    2) What country are you in? Small socialist states are a bit different than a capitalist superpower and require different ways of running.

    3) Your higher quality healthcare is a result of American innovation, something that can't be found in socialist states. That is unarguable.

    4) America was founded on capitalist ideals, and it has risen as a superpower because of them. Just look at Hong Kong.

    5) Please don't get into military arguments. Your country doesn't pay for bombs because it doesn't have to- America does it for your nation (arguably over the top somewhat).

    6) "Social justice"? Do you think capitalism is evil? Would you prefer your imaginary utopia?

This "me first, screw everybody else" attitude is precisely why half the planet hates America. If we want to be at all respected on the world scale, we need to excise this psychological cancer of an attitude.

It's called capitalism, and buddy, it's the only thing on this planet providing the medical innovation thats keeping its people alive.

Yes but there is capitalists who say screw the general public I dont wanna pay  which seems to be the american(or at least californian outlook on these things :-# ) And then there are pseudo socialist nations like certain northern european nations who actually do some things for the common good while providing funding for state projects. Also another reason why american (and right now russian) capitalism is horrible is that something like the 0.5% of the nation(probably much less) owns over 60% of the total wealth

Okay, couple things. I don't know where you got that bunk data from- the general estimate is that the top 15% or so own that much of the wealth. You're off by a magnitude of like 30, so please leave the blatantly false data at the doorstep. Second, the problem in California and the rest of the US is a terrible cancer that's only being fueled by ideologies such as those you mentioned. The top 1% of the nation pays something like 40% of the total income taxes, while the bottom 60% pay 3% of the total taxes of this nation. 25 years ago it was only 18% of total income taxes being payed by the top 1%, but democratic politicians have since pushed the tax burden more and more on the wealthy. What's worse, those same politicians and left-wing voters that are taking more and more money from the rich to pay for this nation's absurd spending are at the same time insulting those who pay most of the taxes in saying things like "they screw the general public" and 'can't pay a little to help those in need.' What's happening in California is a result of this hatemongering. The upper class are fed up with being insulted and at the same time having their tax rates increased, and they're mobile. They leave, and budget deficits remain in their place.

You keep taxing the hell out of that top 10% that's paying for most of this nations debts, and they'll get mobile too. Then what? What happens to this country then?

  9. Grim, you're a fellow sodber so I don't want to get mad at you, but what the [bleep]?

Yall are frikkin boring. If I could have a wish, I'd wish that I could know where something is if I ever lose it/it's stolen. Imagine how much easier life would be. [read]

  10. I wish Reb was a moderator.

I believe all of us (deep down) wish he was.

I remember dissing you about something recently. Please tell me you're not another Adrenal. That guy gives me a bit of a headache.

  11. Earth gets blown up to make way for a hyperspace highway.

    *whistle* Who, me?

From a person who's read the book but yet to see the movie, please don't. This is a nerd joke that needs to stop, a complete corruption of something funny into something not.

  12. Not that I give a shirt about any of your dreams, but what's with all of you? All I've seen is an attempt by everyone to achieve numina level Godliness. Among all the "Infinite Power, Infinite smarts" wishes I'm having trouble actually finding anything of interest. Be creative people, tell us something about yourselves through your choices.

In other words, I swear to [[bleep]ing] God, if I see one more person mention a wish that's already been mentioned a dozen times on this thread, I'm going to become a mod just to shut this thread up.

  13. Eat little? You don't eat much, weigh a spry 110, and you say you're muscular?

Post a pic. I'll bet a c-note you're just saying that 'cause you can barely see your muscle under the little-to-no fat you have.

  14. People post news articles so people think that the forum is getting too full of serious topics & articles.

People post light hearted threads to combat the news articles.

People think that the forum is getting too light hearted with not enough discussion.

People post news articles to combat the light hearted threads.

We're approaching the 'posting news articles & serious discussions stage :)

Or, you know, everyone just whines a lot. Don't put the smiley in. It makes you look intellectually arrogant.

  15. Taking the noob comment too serious eh?

I think it sounds stupid when people say pwn with the "p". But to each its own I guess.

    -1 respect points.

I don't think you're allowed to put someone's total respect points into the negatives.

  16. I hate it when non-nerdy people use it, especially IRL.

Nerds doing it at the right time is win though. Me and some mates walked past a Warhammer shop, 2 guys shouted "Quick Fox! Do a barrel roll!" into the shop, and me and the guys in the store got it. Everyone else looked at them and were like "wtf?"

Was like "hell yeah, inside jokes ftw." Someone mentioned one in Tafe at the start of the semester, found out who were the people to hang with straight away.

You're pompous about inside jokes that you didn't even think of...?

  17. Moderate in the sense I can run for 3km and not die afterwards. I'm on the skinny side as I'm only about 57kg at around 170cm, that's 5' 7" and 126 lb for all you folks who use imperial measurement. I'd like to gain some weight and put on some muscle and hopefully I will following the stronglifts program. Been on it for a few weeks and seems pretty good ::'

Your'e about as high as me but 7kg's heavier although I am what would be called muscular(30cm round the biceps and clearly visible six-pack)

If you weigh 110 and you're taller than him there is no way in hell you're muscular. Maybe you can see muscle underneath you're 2% body fat, but that doesn't make you "what would be called muscular."

30cm about the bicep isn't bad though. If you've got muscle there how do you weigh 110?
