Actually, historically the Papal State and the Holy Roman Empire had huge conflicts over who should be the spiritual successor to the Roman Empire and various other crap. I'm sure it was also part of the reason the protestant reformation kicked off in the HRE rather than elsewhere.

'cept Kiev is Catholic, whereas you are not. I like having the Pope in, gives more variety to the game so people can't just change their state religion every 10 years to randomness. -- Also Spain's the biggest supporter of the Pope, so them trying to turn one of Spain's allies into Christendom's enemies will get their support dropped pretty quickly.

Alright, so with the remainder of last reset's budget (only doing this because resets are too sporadic to know when they are) goes into building a fort in my colony in South Africa, and sending over 500 crossbowmen and 1000 militia swordsmen there.

Yea that's what I would do. Unfortunately this game is based on reality, so a single unit army will generally get demolished, since...they suck.
