Jaziek
when i booted up my PC just now it took in eccess of 10 minutes to actually get to the windows loading screen, let alone log on. I really cant think of what caused this, i mean - it was stuck really early in the boot process - i couldnt even access my BIOS config.. Anyone know what could have caused this? 4737_Carlin
Erm, no. ~Assassin Evolution is a philosophy unsupported by the majority of scientific observations whose influence has been a detriment to society and true scientific advancement. Parabola
Don't do this v v Erm, no. ~Assassin Don't do this ^ ^ It's totally stupid advice. Almost all of those things are required for normal computer operation.
Jaziek
heh... i wasnt about to parabola ... i know its not a windows problem.. i think it might be my motherboard or BIOS.. im just not sure.. it wont boot off disc drives any quicker either. just sits there with a pentium 4 logo on the screen for 5 minutes then suddenly springs into life. x76
I had the same problem with my laptop for quite some time. It eventually resolved itself but it would happen every so often after that. I think its from the processor getting too hot. It usually only happened for me when my laptop shut off from overheating.
Goac
I've had this problem before but my Windows took incredibly long to boot up as well and things wouldn't save permanently onto my computer. I solved it by defragging my hard-drive, running disk clean-up, reinstalling windows and reseting my BIOS settings to optimized defaults until it was working properly. Another issue could be if your CPU is overclocked like my computer boots slow when it's overclocked to 4.0Ghz because of overheating. Unless your system is watercooled excessive overclocking seems to slow down the boot process or cause it not to happen at all :( If problems continue I recommend backing up all your data and reformatting the drive the do a fresh install of windows. Hope this gets you going. :) ~Goac
Jaziek
heh.. this is happening straight after a reformat - its not a HDD problem.. although recently a technician from my PC insurance plan called round and 'fixed' the heatsink - its probably an overheating thing
Cruiser
Running Memtest for a while to test your RAM may be a good idea to rule that out as a possible problem.
Goac
Hmmm a overheating problem check your cpu and make sure the heatsink is seated properly and your fan is plugged in. Does your P4 cpu have a heatspreader on it? Well maybe reapply thermal paste to your cpu or heat spreader and while your at it clean your fan. Maybe go into your BIOS and check your CPU core temp see if it's above average and if it is extremely hot, downclock your cpu. Hope that gets you going. :) ~Goac

I dunno about the thermal paste tbh.. it could be that but i dont want to touch my the innards of my PC too much for fear of breaking it totally. ddcc
If you know the configuration for your system, you can reset the BIOS/CMOS by changing a jumper on the motherboard (generally labeled JMP1, you might want to check documentation). Then if you have a device, configure the BIOS so that that device is present. You might have configured the BIOS to look a for a specific device that is no longer present, that can be why it's being held up.
