Recommended Posts

k, well i been wanting to learn some c++ on my own time, and well i have no clue where to start.

So any insight on where to start, what program to use all that fun stuff.

For any programs you recommend please only recommend ones that i can run on linux, since im to lazy to take the time and set them up with wine.

So please and good tut sites, and or programs for c++ would be amazing.

edit: Oh ya, i did search through pages on Tech/Comp for some insight from other ppl. Got a few ideas from there.

Thanks, ahead of time

well first of all get yourself a compiler (borland's turbo is good)

Id recomend this site for a few c++ tuts:

http://www.pixel2life.com/tutorials

Also go on a few forums and join a programing community, dont go in setting yourself ridiculous goals of how good of a programer you want to be in a set amount of time as you will get flamed to bits. Just go in contribute to the comminity and have fun :)

I've only used it a little, for one assignment and that was more centred around OpenGL. For that assignment I used MS Visual Studio 2005 - but I believe you can get a cut-down version either free or cheap. I do like Visual Studio for development though, I've been using it for my main degree project (VB 2005 .NET).

*gasp* i actualy cant stand the c++ visual studio, the visual basic is good but the c++ isnt nice to new users, the borland compilers are much better.

Do you already know how to program and just wanting to add C++ to your repertoire? Or are you trying to learn programming from scratch.

Different tutorials would be better for each, learning another language is quite different from learning how to program.

Derailing it a bit but i'm going to check out the compiler ash posted. I used Visual basic at school but don't have it at home so I've been wanting something to try and work on my programing a bit.

edit: could you post that list you found? I need to refresh my memory a good bit since that was over a year and a half ago I took C++.

I think you can still get Visual C++ for free personal use if you just need that Visual Studio fix (which I admittedly like)
