Don't be quick to knock off the old system. The fixed cameras were necessary to maintain the mood of the game. The Playstation simply couldn't support a moving camera and still maintain enough detail in the backgrounds. Once you got used to it, the aiming never really was a problem, since most of the time you'd only be turning left or right to aim. I think the 'old' controls worked great once they figured out some minor details that made a world of difference, like the ability to turn 180 degrees with a single button.

Although^^has a point I think new are better.
