Those are the only places you'll get stuff that cheap because they operate via a loophole in the law in their country of origin, Russia. They don't accept CCs because they would have to charge more for each micropayment.

eMusic, iTunes and Napster are among the cheapest and 100% legal sites.

As long as this discussion stays free of illegal music sites, it is fine.

The only program that I know of is iTunes, which seems to charge reasonable ammounts of money for music and stuff.

It pwns the hell out of allofmp3, but like nobody uses it. I can't really figure out why, either. And even if it is a "loophole," I don't care. The artists I listen to are all retired and/or filthy rich, and if I like a band enough I buy their CD anyway (I own 50-some as of now). The record companies are so damned greedy it's not funny - trying to pawn off a 25-cent piece of plastic with a few dollars per CD for production and promotion as $18? That's BS, that's what.

I will however admit that downloading is a problem, especially among people my age. They listen to up and coming artists that don't make much money because people just end up pirating stuff anyway. Almost everybody I know owns maybe two CDs at most. I distribute my music to people on DVDs, but that's because virtually 95% of the music is at least 30 years old anyways, and any loss of profit is negligible for retired rock stars.

I think they need to have public service announcements that guilt people into buying CDs for new artists that aren't filthy rich just yet. But RIAA = the suck no matter what.

Some services you pay to 'rent' the music you download. This means when you stop paying you can no longer listen to the music. I believe Napster is like this, or at least used to be.

So be careful you don't get ripped off any more than you already plan to be.

Blegh, I hate itunes. It runs SO many background programs, it's not even worth it. I can't really help you on a good source, but just not itunes. Plus every time you update it wipes your library and you have to redo a bunch of stuff. Only use it if you have an ipod.

I've used iTunes to convert files to mp3s, very useful as mp3s are a better storage file than wmas and accs(I think that's what iTunes defaults to)
