ok maybe I am just being paranoid as hell but.... heres my story

 

 

 

I was staring my barrows run, happened to be torag as my first hit and some guy says hi to me, naturally me not paying much attention to my rs chat window ignored it. the next thing I know he says

 

 

 

"Welcome to Barrows, be sharing and the gods may be caring"

 

 

 

then complete system lockup, when I rebooted I was at my startup bios screen thing, it said Pheonix Bios, some numbers ect i dont know what, press f2 for setup which naturally didnt work it was still locked up.

 

 

 

I ended up panicing and pulling my network cable out and powering my machine down for a minute and booting back up. when I returned I was alive thankfully it was only torag... but I dont know if it was coincedence that this guy said somethign weird and I locked up or if he did something. I realize its highly unlikely for him to be able to do anything that serious to me in such a short timespan (15s or less) but I just cant say for sure cuz I honestly dont know.

 

 

 

 

 

anyone know what might cause a system to lockout like that and boot to a bios screen?

 

 

 

Am I paranoid? Did I get a hack attempt? all I know is im unplugging my network cable before I go to bed tonight....

It's not a 'hack attempt'. It's got nothing to do with another person.

As Somnambulism said, you did not get hacked. Your computer freezing and the guy saying something was just a freak coincidence.

 

 

 

You should probably start looking into what may have caused your computer to crash tho.

It was a very huge coincidence. There is no way he can hack you via RuneScape. As it goes through the JAGeX server first. If anything, the whole server could have crashed.

Do you have all the Windows update patches?

 

 

 

It's possible that a poorly patched sytem could be sent a "crash packet", though that would require your IP address - the only way that could be obtained through RS, is if someone had got your password, and your IP address did not change from the last time. - then again, if someone had your password, there are simpler things they could do.

 

 

 

Probably coincidence, but if there is an instability in the system, that could be a problem - could be anything, from software interactions, to crud in the heatsink causing overheating.

 

 

 

Heck, the power could have just blipped slightly, and that CAN screwup the reset function on a PC until it gets a full powerdown to reset the reset.

 

 

 

 

 

Everything else in the system working?, all cards? - A PCI card loose in its slot can produce some bizarre symptoms, and some of the longer cards can be very "tail happy", as I call any that have a tendency to lift at the unsecured end.
