Need help with address bar searching.

Featured Replies

Previously, I could type in any word into my internet explorer address bar and it would automatically do a Google search. (E.g. I type "walrus" into my address bar and it comes up with the results page from a Google search for walrus).

I don't know why it does this, I never set it to do so. For some reason now it does an MSN Live Search instead.

Anyone know how to change it back to doing a Google search?

Neither of the files it told me to download worked... even after restarting my computer. When I click the "search" button in Internet Explorer, a Google search engine appears, but when I just type something in the address bar it still does an MSN Live Search.

That's strange - it's directly from Google :P

Did you try this?

If you've installed the QuickSearch utility for Internet Explorer, you can add Google to the list of search engines by adding a new entry (select New), setting up a shortcut gg, and a custom URL http://www.google.com/search?q=%s. With that, you'll be able to perform a search by entering "gg keywords" in the address bar. For example, "gg lava lamps" will search Google for lava lamps.

If I do that I have to install a program onto my computer :(. I don't know why that registry information didn't work or why it even changed to MSN Live Search in the first place  .

Could you press (one at a time) [Alt] [H] [A] and tell me what version you're running?

If you're on Version 7: try this:

[Alt] [T] [O]

Go to the [settings] button by the Searing part (near the bottom)

Select Google from the list and make it your default.

Google is nowhere to be seen.

If I click "Use one search service", the same options are available.

Note: After I installed those registry files, clicking the search button in I.E. brought up a Google window. After restarting my computer, it changed back to MSN Live Search. It's almost as if I'm being forced to use Live Search. Would this have anything to do with a recent automatic update from Microsoft?

This is unbelievable... every single value in the registry was already what that web page told me to change it to. Yet it STILL uses Live Search. I'm sure the Automatic Update has added something that's forcing it to Live Search.

I've done absolutely everything you have suggested, with perfect accuracy, and nothing has had any effect. I'm exceedingly angry with MSN right now.

I'd rather not use FireFox and I certainly don't want a toolbar.

I think it's time to give up... thanks for your help anyhow, it is much appreciated.

Not sure if this will work on IE6 , but it works on IE7 and may point you in the right direction if it detects IE6.

clicking on Google in the list will automatically add google to that list of search providers, you then only have to select it.

Just tested this on my IE7 as Live Search was the default and I never use it.

If it doesnt work for IE6 at all, sorry , worth a shot though :)

Thats pretty sneaky of MS. I guess its the only way they can get people to use their crappy search.
