Looking to buy a new PC, could this be the one?

Featured Replies

Well Unis coming up in october and I'm tempted to buy a new pc, this one looks fairly good and I just wondered if it passed a techies seal of approval test.

What do you want to use the computer for? Its a very low spec machine.

3.2 ghz and 2gb of ram is low spec? currently im running 2.2ghz and 512mb :-s .

as for use probably just uni work and the odd game; supreme commanders always caught my eye we'll go for that as a benchmark.

Its an ok system but the graphics card is poor, it couldn't run supreme commanders.

The other thing is the processor is fairly outdated, I would try and get an intel 2 duo core instead of a Pentium 4.

The RAM is nice but the processor is not very good despite the advertised clock speed. The graphics card is also very low spec and old technology.

Yeah I'm in the process of finding parts for one right now so I could help out or share what I've found if you want. :)

Well primarily it will be for university work, and I'm not too serious about getting one yet as Uni wont start until october so I'm really just doing a preliminary search.

Aside from work it would be nice to be able to play some fairly high end games, like supreme commander and i've always fancied playing WoW although I have no idea what the specs needed for that are. Apart from that nothing major.

In terms of budget it depends how much work I get done over the summer and I don't want to spend too much in case of theives at uni or accidents. For the moment I would like to stay under ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã400 if possible, although Oxford should grant me a pretty nice bursary I don't want it all to go on the Pc :D .

thanks for your continued help btw.

400 euros is like 800 USD right?

Do you want a pre built machine or would you rather put it together yourself and save some cash?

  • Author

prebuilt, I haven't got the knowledge or the guts to put one together myself, unless the saving is drastic or the process is easy :)

and sure 800 US sounds about right.

Gotcha.

I'll look around for some prebuilt machines. Most I might have you do is possibly put in a new video card or something. (a lot of prebuilt machines don't have that great of a card).

If the ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã400 includes a monitor, speakers and Windows license you're gonna struggle to get a spec that will play Supreme Commander. You'll be right on the limit there.

First off sorry for the sporadic replies, moved house and no internet until the 21st <.<

It probably wont include monitor/speakers as I have some decent quality ones that I can take from my current pc. Don't bother yourselves too much about finding one, as I say its just a first look kind of thing.

Also, side note - WoW on a laptop, possible? I'm gona go spec hunting...

You'd be hard pressed finding a decent laptop for ~$800 that'd run WoW good.

having looked my current laptop has 504mb of ram :-s thought it only came in 512 lol, all the other recommended specs are met by my current laptop but will this strange number of ram kill my chances?

That missing 8mb is being used by the integrated video. 8mb of video has no chance of running WoW. If it's adjustable up to 128mb, you might be able to, but it's doubtful.
